When I was investigating how to pull off the roof rails, I discovered that the center part of the rail is a C-section. So you could make up your own angle (structural aluminium angle) and bolt it into a nut bar that you slide into the C-section and held captive there.

the kayaks are 4.6 metres long
the distance between my racks on the pajero is 1.30m

the length of my bars is 1.38m to fit the 2 kayaks upside down.

I wonder how odd it would look to keep the rails and add a single rack up the front ? this could be removed when not needed.

The C-section on the rails are about 1m long. Once you put cross rails on, the cross bars become about 900mm between centers.

That's pretty long and quite a lot of overhang. The bars are only 1250mm long and theoretically, your bars need to be as wide as the kayaks.
Can you place your kayaks so that the bottoms are in contact with each other. Perhaps this can reduce the width requirements somewhat...

If you kept the rails, and bought cross bars, I would install the rear bar and make a custom bracket for the front bar. The front bar could be attached into the C-section or pickup on the mounting bolts on the front end caps. It would look a bit odd though but as long as it is practical and does the job....

Have you got a pic of your kayaks? One thing to look out for is to make sure that the kayaks don't touch the roof when carried upside down.

i'll have one on the pajero roof tomorrow and will take a pic.
I only have about 15mm clearance at the moment between the kayak and the roof.
I could look at cradles but it isn't as aerodynamic and adds extra height when the kayaks aren't on.

Tomorrow i'll have the car and i'll post the kayak pic.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

I have done a partial install and removed the left hand rail and installed the 3 pads in preparation of the new racks. The car looks a bit odd now with 3 pads down the left and factory rail down the right.

I measured the centre distance between the front and rear mounting points and they are 1330mm. So about 30mm further apart than your Pajero.

I've also contacted Rhino direct (Rydalmere) and they sell the missing mounting pad covers for $2.50 ea. So I'll be picking those up from them when I drive to Sydney in Christmas or get a relative to pick it up for me.

Also, on the Rhino website, you can buy any bar combination you like whether it is just the fronts, middle or rears; or front and middle; front and rear; or middle and rear. However, Rhino's rrp for a 2 bar setup is the same as Toyota's 3 bar setup.

I also noticed that Rhino sell different length bars, for eg, for the LC100, the bar length is 1375mm.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

If you go with the Rhino HD there are three lengths of cross bars you can choose from.

The standard ones for the Prado kit are 1280mm ( I think ) but I upgraded to 1375mm ( or whatever the next length up is ) for a few bucks extra.
This gave me a bit more width to mount a luggage basket plus have the Maxtrax on one side and the shovel holders on the other side.

The overhang is also quite handy to hang lights etc on when camping.

They are a bit noisy when unloaded, but I only have them on for trips anyway.

You can sorta see it here ( sorry about the quality )

            Cheers, Wayne

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

I have the toyota areo type bars, however I only have two of them.

The toyota guy told me that you can't buy the third bar on it's own, only as a set.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

I just sat my Rhino bars on the roof rails to give me an idea of how the kayak would sit.
I don't mind the position of it but the front isn't supported very well.
When we go on a long trip i use the kayaks as top lockers and this would make them too front heavy to even sit on the racks.
I could use cradles, that would mean turning the kayaks up the other way but i could then slide them further off the back and just attach a flag.

                hmmmm decisions decisions

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

So you've already got a set of Rhino HD bars? Cheapest option is to just get the feet to match the Prado and remove the roof rails to get the furthest separation.

If you stuff luggage into the kayaks and they are too heavy, then you could always buy a hitch mounted cargo carrier to carry another 50-100kg. I have something similar to the stuff here

I do have the HD bars from the pajero.
The cargo carriers look great, unfortunately we usually have 4 bikes on the back.

Here is a pic of the Toyota 3 bars with my homemade roof platform attached.

I also found that the bars gave a bit of a whistle between 40 and 60km/h. So I got some foam strips (PE30X - polyethylene) which does not absorb water and stuffed it into the ends of the bars. I also used the foam strip to seal up the channel in the bars to hopefully improve the aerodynamics.

                          Josie,

If you fitted the 1250mm long racks, then the widest Rhino alloy tray recommended is from the xx10 series, as opposed to the xx12 series. You would need longer bars if you wanted to fit the xx12 series alloy tray.

has anybody tried the prorack bars? I am looking at the whisper bar as they sit almost flush with the Toyota rails that come on the Grande.

Yeah i have been thinking about those as well but havent seen any feedback on how solid they are or how they go fitting other accesories to them.

I believe they have a lower carrying capacity than the Rhino/OE bars
