    Re: Towbar installation instructions

Im still tied up about which way I should go, a genuine toyota towbar or a Hayman reece. It seems I can get the toyota bar for about 370, and a HR for about 410. From what I understand both can be fitted with ease (which I plan to do).. Is there a better option here? I dont tow caravans (yet) but the old man is looking for a coromal I believe.. Can anyone help make this decision ?

you should be able to get genuine a bit cheaper than that. it would be a bit quicker to fit out of the 2 as it doens't have the 2 fiddly bolts on the back of the towbar. I still opted for the HR. I looked at both and the HR looked stronger and is slightly higher when fitted. plus they had a lifetime warranty whereas toyota only said 1 year.

            Re: Towbar installation instructions

In an earlier post Chris said

the connection for the chains is very visible in the photo but further underneath in the line drawing as on mine ... a pain to fit chains when I connect the Jayco.
I have the HR fitted and also tow a Jayco.
It is a real challenge to get the chains on because the holes for shackles is too far underneath.

Has anyone come up with a safe easy system to attach chains to the HR towbar?

              Re: Towbar and safety chains

              G'day Pedro
I was at the Sydney caravan show yesterdayand talked to a guy on the Hayman Reese stand about a number of things.
I asked as to why the shackle point was so far back.
              Answer
When they moved the mount point forward the bar failed.
Towing our small Jayco I got into the habit of leaving the shackle on the bar and joined the van chain on at the pin end of the shackle.
I am unsure if this is regarded as best practice?
With the new van we get in 3 weeks time    I must have rated shackles.
The pin will go through the mount point on the bar but the body of the shackle won't.
Hayman Reese guy said that their stamped D shackle was tested but not rated.
They also had on display an extra plate the fitted on to the hitch at towball height that leagally allows you to join chain. He explained it was to cope with differences in regulation across Australia. It seems that in WA (i.e Coromal ) you are limited as to the length of chain allowed on the van.
Chains are the easier difference to cope with when buying a van interstate.
Do you have any experience with brakeaway brake battery monitors?
              Cheers

                Re: Towbar installation instructions

                Thanks Chris,
Did you get the "extra plate" you saw at the show?

Will that fix the problem, and what did they cost?

                  Re: Towbar installation instructions

Sorry to hijack an old thread, but I have a Prado Grande 11/2008 and I was looking to have a towbar mounted, interested in a Hayman Reese unit. The instructions above are interesting but does anyone know of a retailer on the north of Brisbane that fits HR towbars that does a decent job?

                          Re: Towbar installation instructions

                          Guys,
I have the Toyota bar and it is fine. What I want to know (if anyone has done it) is can the toyota towbar accommodate an AT35 Hitch setup? If so, can I get just another tongue and interchange tongues with the ball and the AT35? Any idea on cost of another tongue and an AT35 setup?
                          Cheers.
