i emptied mine by removing the pan. 7 litres came out like WTF. thought it should only be 2 litres in there

Sounds like a lot or you didn't undo the correct sump. There is a procedure to check correct levels after filling up. Someone might know for the 1KZ.

I think you took off the oil sump pan,and not the autopan...7 litres of engine oil I'd believe...but 7 litres of auto fluid???

I was told by someone the definition of "Filled for Life".

To a dealer who you need to remember mainly only sees car during warranty period. So their life is the warranty period, so a gearbox is filled for warranty.

At work we recommend MAXIMUM 80k for trans that are "Filled for Life". With fully synthetic fluids this day and age they are just about the same price as regular oils, so at work we only use synthetic auto oils.

The filler plug from memory is 24 mm with WS written on it. It sits at the rear of the trans up above the horizontal. Undo the "check plug" and fill trans till it runs out. Start vehicle run through gears and then with engine idling fill until oil comes out of "check Plug". From memory the check plug is a 5mm allen key.

Good memory!. Add drain plug is 14mm. Set auto level at 40-45 degrees.

Auto Trans holds 7 litres and the torque converter will retain about 4litres when you drain the sump. total dry refill is 11.6 litres.

Any issues with running the wrong fluid?
I changed mine a couple of weeks ago and put Penrite multi vehicle ATF-FS in it as that's what Repco had listed for the Prado 5 speed.
The box runs fine except for when I ease my foot of the accelerator as I reach my intended speed it flares a bit before selecting the next gear.
It doesn't happen all the time. Maybe once or twice on my daily drive to work.

I put 14l into mine so far, and still coming out half black, will keep flushing with further 4 litres, waiting for them to arrive (Nulon)

I have a 2008 Prado 120 Diesel with the 5 speed auto thats done 165,000kms. I bought it at 128,000kms and I don't think fluid ever been changed.
I bought 2 x 4Litre containers of Penrite Full synthetic LV Auto Trans Fluid.
I also made sure I had some drain/check plug compression washers from Toyota and the O ring for the Fill plug.
I drove the car up onto some 4 inch high ramps I made from railway sleepers.
First drain:
If the car has been driven then it will take the transmission and motor coolant many hours to cool from 80C to the correct temperature of 46C.
Warmed up the car (to 46C - see how I checked temps below) then drained what was in the pan; 3 Litres of very dark fluid drained out. I replaced the drain plug and pumped 4L of fresh fluid back in. Replaced the fill plug (O ring was fine).
Ran the motor for about 5 minutes whilst changing through the gears. Stopped Motor.
Second drain:
Removed the check plug and one litre came out (just to see how much) - quite dark but a little better looking. Replaced the check plug and removed the drain plug to let the rest, 3 Litres out.
Replaced drain plug together with a new washer and filled again with another 4Litres. Replaced the fill plug.
Ran motor again for 5 minutes changing through the gears. Left motor running and with Transmission temperature at 46C (I used a OBD2 Code Scanner Bluetooth Adapter plus the Android App 'Torque' to see the temp) I removed the check plug and let the excess drain out (it was 1 Litre). Putting on a new washer I replaced the Check plug.
I then torqued up the 3 Plugs:
Fill plug 39Nm or 29 Ft Lb
Drain Plug 28Nm or 21 Ft Lb
Overflow Check Plug 20 Nm or 15 Ft Lb
In case you need them:
{Oil Pan 4.4 Nm or 39 Inch Lb}
{Strainer 10 Nm or 7 Ft Lb}
I was unable to tighten the drain plug to 21 FtLb as it kept turning long after it should have been tight - Grrrrr Must investigate further tomorrow - Might have the washer wrong way round? Hope threads not stripped (don't see how).
Then went for a drive. The transmission REALLY likes the 8 Litres (somewhat less due to mixing with old then draining 4 L) of fresh Fluid. Shifts are now so smooth and I swear the car is quieter.
On returning home I realised I couldn't find my Magnetic Work light I had fastened to a chassis member!!! Had a look underneath and the 10Km drive hadn't loosened it!! Phew!!
If you've drained engine oil and Diff oils then this was just as easy. You do need to hose down underside of car and hose you work area (leave to dry) to have things VERY clean and dry. You do need to maintain absolute cleanliness when working on this Transmission - even for just fill plugs etc. No dust or grit falling or touching anything like plugs, fill hoses etc.

How replacing fluid will probably never replace it all - unless perhaps a full flush.
Assuming 12Litres total and adding 4 Litres each tiime after draining whats in the pan:
1st Exchange 35%
2nd Exchange 57%
3rd Exchange 72%
4th Exchange 82%
5th Exchange 88%
6th Exchange 92%
7th Exchange 95%
8th Exchange 97%
9th Exchange 98%
10th Exchange 99%
11th Exchange 99%
12th Exchange 99%
13th Exchange 100%
Think I might eventually stop at 4 exchanges each time!!

It's easier and cheaper to pay the auto trans guys to power flush it. That way you know it's all coming out.

If you drain the transmission sump, note the volume, then refil it with same volume clean ATF.

Then disconnect the return ATF hose from the radiator, redirect that into a bucket.

Start the engine and pump out ~ 1 L less than above (you should be able to pump out 2L at a time). Refil the sump with clean ATF.

Repeat several times.

At 10 L you through the system you should see perfectly clean (red) ATF.

This is very easy to do... just a bit fiddly.

Just be sure to disconnect the correct hose as the trans pumps reasonably quickly and it WILL get messy!
