    Re: power socket prado 150

Stupid me plugged a small 1500 watt vacuum cleaner into the rear socket and wondered why it wouldn't work and nothing else would work after that either. Duh. ops:

Edit: Just checked it with a mobile battery charger and it's working OK. I'm not very good on electrical matters but shouldn't plugging the 1500 watt vacuum cleaner into the 100 watt socket have blown the fuse, or is it that if there are not enough watts to drive the appliance then it just doesn't work.:?:

From the symptoms you describe it's probable that the inverter has an overload cut out in it. This will trip when too much load is put on it, and it will reset after a certain time.
Quicker acting than a fuse and probably essential on such a low power inverter, otherwise the dealers would be constantly replacing fuses.
I wouldn't be testing this too often though.

I still can't understand if they put an invertor in ( not a bad idea ) why they didn't put a 300W or 600W one in, which would be at least reasonably useful. ( still wouldn't drive your vacuum cleaner though )

I have a 300W one cost me $80 and charges my power tool batteries, and can drive my laptop etc.

Thanks for that ozwapet2. That probably explains why the mobile phone charger wouldn't work yesterday shortly after I stupidly plugged the vacuum cleaner in. I had expected the fuse to be blown so I checked it today and it was OK (15 amp).

If the 100 watt inverter can run a 40 litre fridge when driving I'll be happy.

Has anyone run a 12/240 volt fridge off the 100 watt 220 volt inverter socket in the back of the 150 series Prado. I was in at ARB looking at their fridge and they said it may not work. They said it might overload the inverter and that 220 volts may not be enough to run the fridge (even though I notice in their brochure it says it runs on 100 - 240 volts).

Your only going to power up things like chargers, lights, stereos and the like. To power up a lappy power supply your gonna need more grunt than 100W with 500W more the likely figure needed.

Nonetheless, this is a great inclusion to the vehicle, I'm sure it wouldnt be too hard to rip out the stock one and put in a bigger one. I didn't look today Neil to see if the one at the Spring Festival today had the 12V socket in the back still. Did you happen to notice?

            Terry

PS: The Black Hilux SR5 dual cab looked S@#t hot IMO.

What sort of laptop do you run? I have a very large HP notebook and it only draws 90W on 240v so it should be fine to run. It will be perfect for charging up all those things we take away.
            Thanks,

The voltage is not the issue, it is the max. wattage/current that the inverter can supply.
Even if the device you want to power is rated less than 100 Watts ( or about 0.4 amps at 240V ), the initial start induction current of compressors/motors/power supplies etc may well exceed that. So when the device tries to start it causes the invertor to trip the overload hence never gets running.

I have a 300watt inverter but try to run a 300W power tool off it, no way. Just shuts down.

                Re: power socket prado 150

Picked up the 150 two weeks ago. The power socket is 100w, and only works with the ignition ON. Found it will run the laptop which normlly needs a 250w inverter to run it from a cold start due to the inrush current.

I bought a new 47 litre ARB fridge yesterday. Plugged it into the 100w inverter socket this morning and it ran like a charm. One happy camper here.

                    Cargo Area Power Socket

I have notice the the power socket in the back of the new Prado is now 220V 100W stand socket. No ciggy lighter socket.

Where do I plug in the engel? Is it ok to plug in the 240V cabble?

                      Re: Cargo Area Power Socket

I have a GXL, which has a cig plug in the rear of the driver arm rest, near the rear climate control.

Slide the 2nd row seats forward, push the cable under these to the socket, then slide the seats back. Hide the cable under the rear mats, and one would never know it's there. Or, have a designated plug (and appropriate wiring) installed in the kick panel in the rear. Mine plug is near the cup holder.

I've run my 47 litre ARB fridge off the 220V socket without any probs ....... only used it while driving.

                          Re: power socket prado 150

Hello, I have a Apple Macbook Pro that uses a Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter Input Voltage AC 100-240 V Frequency Required 50 - 60 Hz

Often I will set it up in the back for the kids to watch movies on - but I haven't had any luck powering the computer from the power socket in the 150.

Has anyone had success or can give me any input on why mine might not be working?

                          Thanks heaps
                          Lance

Issue sorted - quality control... back of the socket was not connected properly... so had to pull the little panel off and sort out - all good now - anyone know what the gearing in there is for???

Hi guys. First post as a new member, having bought my new Prado a few weeks ago.

Anyway, regarding inverters. A 100W inverter, as standard in my new GXL, will provide a maximum of around 0.4 Amps (ohms law). However most electrical items have a much higher startup current - typically up to 10 times more. So if you want to run a 100W item on the inverter, chances are it will require the equivalent of between 500W and 1000W to 'get it started'. Once started, the steady state current will settle down to the 100W.

Typically when sizing an inverter, you should purchase one which is rated at around 10 times the required steady state current.
