    Re: power socket prado 150

    Hi Guys,

I have a question, what if I run the 240v to the caravan, during driving to charge my Caravan Battery, that in turn runs my caravan fridge?!?
I can understand that the fridge uses more power than it gets charged with, but at least I can extend it.

Would this work? Are there any serious restrictions/laws about running 240v over the A-frame while driving (and potentially crashing)?

Is this a real stupid question :?

    Cheers,
    Marco

Not a very good idea... 240vac is 240vac any way you look at it, regardless of its source. Its requires the same respect the wall sockets you have in your house get - only difference is the inverter is rated for 100W loads whereas the house circuits are rated for 3850W loads. Secondly, the inverter provides 416mA of current, well above the rated trip level of 30mA for an RCD protection device.

        Dangerous!!! Yes, stupid question...

A trip to your local 4wd accessory shop or auto electrician would be a good idea also, have an anderson plug and charge wire fitted to the vehicle and caravan/camper trailer,"It may just save your life or a friend or family members life 240V can kill :!: "

My 47l ARB fridge runs Intermittently from the 240v socket. I've plugged it in around 6 times and has only worked half the time.
I've given up on it and am using the 12v cord with extension lead into the 2nd Row 12v socket.

So in summary - I don't trust it to run my fridge.

Hey fellas. You could even use those single phase outlets to plug in a battery charger and top up the Prado batteries - Do you think?

                    Re: power socket prado 150

Couldn't find power data for the ARB 47L but a Waeco of similar size is rated 0.7A @ 240V which is around the 170W mark, so the inverter will have a hard time running a fridge of that size. The fridge should a data plate somewhere near the 240V input socket that gives this sort of info.

I just checked my 29L Engel and it is rated at 48W on AC so the inverter should handle that comfortably (not sure how big inrush current is for these types of fridges though), but is only "on" when accessories are on, so its not ideal to keep the fridge cold when the car isn't running. Best bet for a fridge is to run an aux battery with a DC socket in the rear. For me, the aux battery install is on hold for a little while as I am suffering from a time/cash problem at the moment, so I needed an alternate option.

My smaller battery charger is rated at 6amps which equates to about 85W. I have used this to test charge a half flat 50Ah battery pack and it ran fine for 5 minutes and didn't cut out - thats not to say it won't, I just haven't run it for long enough to find out . With my fridge running from the battery pack and the pack being charged from the charger hooked up to the inverter, I then have a system similar to an under-bonnet aux battery.

It will do for now till I get all the bits together for a permanent aux battery setup in the engine bay.

                    cheers

I was in at ARB looking at their fridge and they said it may not work. They said it might overload the inverter and that 220 volts may not be enough to run the fridge (even though I notice in their brochure it says it runs on 100 - 240 volts).
I run a WAECO fridge in the back and it works fine. Doesn't run when I turn the engine off but that is okay. I take the fridge into the motel room. If you go bush bashing you might want a second battery and run the fridge constantly off that.

                          Ditto,
have done about 15 days outback camping around Alice last year with a Waeco 50lt. using the standard 100watt 3pin plug with no problems. Just hook up the 36watt portable Waeco power supply when camped for the night and charged it up each day while driving (around 4hours a day) Obviously a bit fiddly and not a permanent setup, a dual battery system is on the list, but works well enough.
Maybe the Engels draw that little extra for them not to work ???

PS. Luv the power of the V6, I'll pay the marginal fuel $ difference until they put a decent oil burner in to what is a great touring chasis.

I can run my engel 32l engel fridge on the inverter. However I no longer do as i have dual batteries but is no problem doing so.
Also today found that the cigarette socket or the built in USB port isn't powerful enough to charge my iPad however if I plug the 240v charger into the rear inverter no problem charging it..

Yes it is an Aussie plug - I tested it yesterday and it is only active when the car is running, so you shouldn't flatten your battery - works well for a laptop charger.

Can i use 220v Inverter to run a 40l Engel Fridge?

Just a quick one, looking at getting an Engel 40l Fridge/Freezer, will the small output of the Inverted 220v Socket in the rear be sufficient to run the Fridge or am i best to run it off 12v? The 220v is more convenient to use than the 12v, however knowing the inverter is very small i was curious if it was sufficient to run the fridge.

                                Thx in advance!
