  • Kakadu's camera's

Hi guys crawled over a Kakadu today at the spring festival and as you may know they come with 4 cameras. The tail one which the GXL and above have a nose one and one on each side mounted on the wing mirrors. Very discretely I might add.

Here is a couple of camera shots

    first reverse camera

Then front and left hand side selected

What I liked was cameras are selected by controls on the steering wheel. What I did not like is the lighting for the side camera's. It is basically mounted level with the side steps just under the body. the brackets look a little tougher than the side step ones but the lamp is still relitively exposed. surly they could have gone for some LED style lighting.

    Re: Kakadu's camera's

The Kakadu has two different camera systems. One in the safety pack option that includes four cameras and which deals wtih most parking issues etc and the other system included in the off-road pack. With the latter you get predictive steering where the front camera gives you a guide on where the front wheels will be in relation to the steering input you are using. This is handy when climbing blind crests etc where the camera sees the track whilst all you can see is sky through the front windscreen. This is available in low range only and switches off over 10 kph. Apart from that you can also set the screen view for either front or either side mirror camera. Another rather useful function in tight spots

The reversing capability uses the front predictive steering algorithms but applies them to help reverse accurately

    Regards

The reversing camera with predictive safety zones is a boomer, I sometimes drive my mates 470 Lexus (Very Flash 200 series) and reversing it a long distance up his driveway is a dream, although I do love reversing using mirrors normally. Just my experience using tojos new reversing aids!

        Re: Kakadu's camera's

Hey guy's I was just wondering after seeing the Kakadu and the positioning of the cameras raised a question the sales guy couldn't answer, so here it is the front camera is perched on the front grill soooo what if I got an after market bullbar and spotlights, does that mean I have a good look at the back of the lights or even winch control box. Secondly the reverse camera looks like it is mounted in the hard wheel cover what if I get a nice set of mud terrain's and the spare wheel cover doesn't fit it anymore what happens to the camera or if I fit a dual wheel carrier.
And one more question what happens to those fancy light washes if I fit a non Toyota bullbar, I hope there is a logical answer or isn't the Kakadu meant to go off road with non Toyota aftermarket accessories.
Hope someone can put my mind too ease

          Re: Kakadu's camera's

One of the reasons why there is no OE bull bar for this model at the moment is they are trying to resolve several challenges which are:
How do you mount driving lights when you have an intercooler at the front of the radiator. Read closely the information on the Toyota website. You will find a comment that says "no driving lights can be fitted to this bar"

Design and warranty a bull bar that is airbag compliant and allows the mounting of the front camera. Aftermarket suppliers are going to be challenged by this

Will they permit a winch bar with an OE spec? At this stage the scuttlebut is that is a no on any model along with driving lights

Given the issues at hand I suspect any claims made under warranty where a vehicle has aftermarket accessories fitted are going to come under some scrutiny, depending on the claim of course

Still early days you never know what may come of it all

Maybe another good reason to stick with the V6, power to burn, no injector issues and now intercooler concerns to add to that.

WOW glad I asked that question before I started really looking at one, maybe a prado won't be our next car when we upgrade unless I take it off road on the nature strip when I wash it. What about the reverse camera thru all models :?

Maybe you should buy a 120 while there are stilll some good deals to be had.

Went to visit my local dealer to check out the 150's and noticed they had special run out deals on the 120 series - There was one 120 D4D Grande (with sovereign bullbar) left for the bargain price of 92k driveaway  I was under the impression they were a fair bit cheaper than this?

Well they were. I recall being shown list plus on-roads for around 85k (without sovereign bar) in April/May when I was looking. I know I paid a lot less than that as my car was a demo with 4k on the clock.

                      Get them while you can.

                        Re: Kakadu's camera's

Another possible reason Toyota still hasn't got a bar for the 150 is the manufacturer of Soveriegn bars went out of business last year. The reason I know this is that many spare parts for my 120 series bar are not available, even up to a few weeks ago.

When I was up at ARB several weeks ago they had the front of a 150 in bits obviously working on a new front bullbar so would suspect that is not too far away

I was in ARB on the weekend and the Store Manager told me that a new bull bar compatible with the front camera is on the way. Spoke the the dealer where I bought my Kakadu and he said Toyota are still working on development of the new bull bar and the camera is the major issue. Airbag compatible shouldn't be a problem, but the lights a bit of an issue.

I have the so called camera compatible nudge bar on my Kakadu.

The camera still works fine, but the only thing I see is a reflection of my grill in the chrome bar.

I can't understand why the camera could not be relocated and fitted into a nook in the bars.

Bar looks good though, even from behind

I have just had an ARB sahara bar fitted to a new kakadu, ARB recommend the winch box be remote, which is what I have had done, and the bar certainly is a feature when viewing the front view camera, in fact you cannot see much else.
Local ARB guys are talking with me about fitting the camera into a fake winch box on top of bar which would then also allow me to fit a set of additional lights as well. we'll see how it goes.
