Fitted the P3 today. Used the Tow BRK fuse . Picked it up at the left foot well. Mounted the controller on the RHS next to the steering column.

Also finished the bonding of the bonnet for the HF Smartbar antenna.. So that's it for a while, time to go on a trip.

Mine is now installed in the Facelifted GXL. It fits very neatly in the centre console and is out of sight when not needed. I took a bunch of photos of how to get everything comes apart and where the holes go etc. I'll put them up if needed. It would be a quick job...the second time around.

As for the Australian Standard mentioned earlier:

AS4177.5 Caravan and Trailer towing components
      part 5 Electrical Connectors
      Pin 5 - Blue
      Minimum 2.5mm2, Minimum 15A D.C.

2.5mm might not cut it for you though due to voltage drop. Best do your own calculations.

There was no mention of a particular requirement for fuse type.

      Cheers

        Hi Guys,

I am Currently looking around at brake controller options. I like the look of the redarc, however I would really prefer a proportional controller so that if someone else drives the car (wife) they do not have to bother consistently adjusting etc.

So, can anyone show me pictures of their Tekonsha P3 installed on either the left or right hand side near drivers knee.

What I would most like to see is a picture of the bracket on the dash when the P3 is removed? I thought I saw an image of it mounted with a plastic looking mount that was flush with the dash?

As we would only tow a few times per year, it could be removed 99% of the time, but as I am quite tall I wouldnt want to be banging my knees when getting in or out of the car, reaching around into the back etc

Depending on how far out the mount protrudes, I may look at locating the controller in the glovebox next to the fuel card holder like this post: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post400777

Then hook up the remote override as per this post:

        Cheers,
        Kevin

          Hi Guys,

          Thanks for all the info.
I have a new GXL 150 and completed the installation of a P2 controller yesterday.
All the colours and locations of the wires and fuse made it easy to connect.
Used the grey wire in the LHS footwell for the power and conncted it to the brake wire in the tow bar loom at the rear.
i located it in the same place as Dingle looks neat, close the door and it's out of site.

          Thanks again

          Fred

I'll be installing mine where Dingle put his. I usually remove the controller from the car when not in use, so that's an awesome spot.

As for the wiring, did anyone find out if the USA Pigtail can plug into an existing loom anywhere? If so, what other items did you require?
I've ordered the kit from Derek anyway, but just interested to see if there is a plug and play option.

I have one to go into my 120 (havnt done it yet) but on my old 95 I had it mounted to the left of the steering wheel (down near knee) my main reason for mounting there was if the wife was driving/towing I was able to reach across if need be and use the overide where as my wife wouldn't know what she was feeling for or know exactly what to do in a situation. As long as the brakes on the trailer worked when she put her foot on the brake was the main concern to her. She only ever towed twice and hated it big time but I made her do it in case of emergency situations where I might not have been able to, same as driving a manual, just in case she new how to...... Good one Steve. I'm still trying to convince mine to drive the Prado let alone towing for same reason.

                Cheers Jim.

I have the opposite problem, especially when it gets gnarly, she wants to kick me out of the drivers seat

It has paid of twice when I have been unable to drive, both times towing, once in the Vic High country and the other time through flooded outback tracks!

OT and at the risk of being deleted again you NEED the other half to be able to drive in all conditions. What if you break a leg etc. took some convincing at first but now my wife will drive anything. Sometimes places I wouldn't. And like AJ she has dragged me back home once or twice.

Glad you like the posi MD. It's worked a treat. PM for further photos of hole locations etc if you want them.

After an exhaustive search I can guarantee you there unfortunately isn't a plug and play option on the Australian build.
                      Cheers

REDARC have since made the Tow-Pro that has inertia proportional breaking and is compatible with AL-KO ESC .
I fitted the remote unit to the passenger side panel on the gearbox hump.
I machined out the back of one of the dash blanking plugs to fit the controller unit.
A mill makes this easy but a Dremil works ok.
I mounted it in the blanking plug beside the VSC control switch. Note this position is free on the GX but not all models.
For convenience I used Dereks wiring harness and his instructions made it easy removing trim etc.
If anyone knows of blanking plugs that fit the Prado and don't require machining out to fit switches/controllers it would be great as it is a bit fiddly.
                        Regards
                        Terry

Hi There, I am just starting out and have enjoyed reading all your comments. I have just purchased a 2010 VX Prado, and as everyone else getting it ready for a big trip. I have been recommended the following: Redarc EBRH-ACC Tow Pro Electric Brake Controller With Remote Hideaway Module and Separate Control & LED Light. Seems easy enough to install, still trying to check different sites about the blue spare wire? Are also looking at running Anderson plug at the same time for van, any hints on getting all the wires through would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to getting on the road.
                          thanks Darren

There are a few threads about running power to the back, have a look through the electrical section and dual battery threads. Typically run along the chassis. If you have a Toyota towbar and wiring harness you will probably find the blue wire coiled up in the jack compartment. Some choose to swap this with a heavier gauge wire. Up to you but it really depends on what brakes you are running on the trailer and size. You can run the brake wire through the same grommet in the jack compartment if you decide to change the blue wire.

Hello everyone, first time post for me.

I joined the forum to get an insight on how to wire up and run the cable for the brake controller. It is the Tekonsha P3.
Thanks to all the good posters.

I ended up installing mine in the glove compartment, removing the pointless credit card box. I was a bit dubious as to how it would end up, and whether it ws a safe best for the operation of the brake controller. Thankfully all went well and works a treat.
Again, thanks to all who posted and gave me some insight in running cables and what to expect!
