    150 rear drawers

Got my new Drifta drawers on Friday. Here's a couple of pics. Full details are on my build up page "Sams 150 V6". Very happy with them!

        Re: 150 rear drawers

Hi and Happy New Year to all,

I thought I would share a few photos of my Christmas holidays project. With all the rain we've had up here in Rocky prior to Christmas Day I had plenty of time to tinker in the shed, visit Bunnings a few too many times and keep the local economy rolling along. Having a long hard think for the past few months about storage drawers, and in particular the 'value for money' of the commercial offerings, I decided to take the plunge and have a crack at some DIY units.

Obviously the first point of call was to remove the rear seats. This was pretty simple and took about twenty minutes. I haven't posted any pictures of this process as others have previously taken care of that. As having previously owned two seven seat Patrols, both of which had the 6th & 7th seats removed from day one, I knew that once the rear seats came out of the Prado, they would not be going back in.

The drawers were made from all of my own measurements and calculations - i.e. I didn't have any set plans prior to starting work, I only knew that two side-by-side drawers were to be the outcome of the project. Having built a single drawer and fridge slide arrangement for my old Patrol, I had a pretty good idea of what we needed to match the way we use the car.

I'm not a cabinet maker by any stretch of the imagination. I did a bit of internet research on how to build drawers (kitchen etc) and basically copied that methodology. I used 25mm sq aluminium box to build the frame of the entire setup, with 12mm ply being used to reinforce it's structural integrity. I used 9mm MDF for the drawer sides and bottoms and 12mm MDF for the topside. 750mm long - 95Kg rated slides were used.

As you can see in the photos, I made a little access point for the space at the rear left of the cargo area. I'll probably just store some rags or similar down there.

I have retained the cargo area mat for the interim as a protector for the carpet. We will be installing a fridge slide on the right hand side of the car at some stage. I'm yet to decide whether we will use the old slide I have or invest in a drop down slide from MSA. When it does go in, I'll build some kind of framework around it so that the space above the fridge can be utilised for storage while still accessing the fridge. When we go touring, this fridge is actually used as our freezer, so the need to access it is usually only once a day.

The other part of the job to finish it off will be a custom cargo barrier. That's in the 'still thinking about it' basket. Any suggestions are welcome. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the result. Total cost (apart from the new Router - don't tell the Missus  ) was approximately $400.

        Happy days. Cheers.

        Neale.

            Re: 150 rear drawers

Is there anybody that can give me the floor length and width (between wheel arches) with the 3rd row seats removed and also in place? I.e. from the back door sill to the bottom of the rear seats. Also what height do you gain by removing the seats?

            Thanks in advance

Great job Neale. Just wondering how the alluminium frame went together, was it welded?

                Hi Grevis,

I used Qubelok to join the aluminium together. It is available at Bunnings and Capral Aluminium.

                http://www.capral.com.au/ProductsExt...alLinkProducts

I made a single draw and fridge slide system using Qubelok for my previous 4wd (a Patrol), which survived a trip to The Cape without any issues whatsoever. It's really easy to use.

                cheers.

                    Thanks Lissted.
I am very impressed with your set-up and would appreciate the cutting list if you wouldn't mind. I am a new(2 days old) Prado 150 owner and do not want third row seats.

                    Thanks in advance.

I kept my home made drawer system out of my 120 with the hope it would slot straight in to the new GX. Although the rear cargo area width is the same as the 120, Toyota have reduced the depth by around 100mm. This necessitated rebuilding the back of the drawer unit to make it fit. The second row seats also lean further back in the 150. As a result my Waeco CF50 only just fits in. If I had opted for the GXL I think I would have been struggling and certainly wouldn't have been able to open the fridge lid without sliding it out the back door (not always possible when the caravan is hooked up with the stone guard in place due to door not able to open fully). We also occassionally use a Two-Zone extension on the fridge which would be impossible in a GXL because of the height. My drawer system incorporates a 50L water tank behind the seats which is imperative when we go bush for extended periods. A fold up table lives permanently below the large drawer and there is space down the side of the unit for a short handle shovel and tyre repair kit. Normally our camp chairs travel on top of the drawer held in place with tie down straps.

Anyone else built up a set of drawers for the GXL Prado? I am interested in doing this too, and wonder if anyone else has photos of the process and/or a different drawer set up. There are lots of comments about the process of removing the third row of seats and that seems to be the way to go if you want to maximise the use of available space. Also, I am brand new at this sort of caper and worry about stuffing it up! Does anyone have any "top tips" to make sure things go smoothly?
                        Cheers

Hi guys, some plans posted on PP site (if anyone has them) may help everyone in the same situation. I'm sure there are many members who would benefit and give it a go to save some bucks.
                            I'm interested also.

Your drawers are a nice neat job, Sidewinder. I'm looking to build myself a set. Could you please tell me what thickness of ply you used, and where you got your stainless steel latches from? Also, are the latches lockable?
