  • GXL Drivers Side Wing Mirror Replacement

    Hi Folks,

A slight tale of woe. The GLW had the Prado for the day and had parked out the front of the house she was visiting. Reasonably quiet side road, however there is a school bus run that goes done the road. And yes, the bus went through and clipped the mirror. So the mirror is left hanging there by the wiring loom with some shattered pieces of the bus's indicator on the road but no bus in sight.

    Damned buses.

I rang the local dealer and he quoted me $612 for a replacement mirror fitted! So I rang around Melbourne town and found Japwreck in Keysborough would sell me a new replacement for $225+GST. He's getting the mirror in for me tomorrow so hopefully that will all be good. I think that I am getting a complete mirror assembly replacement.

In the mean time I needed to get the old mirror off. This link http://www.kwmuth.com/techsupport/pdfs/21000890.pdf got me 90% of the way there but neglected to mention the screw that is under the windows control panel. You just need to pop the control panel up and remove the screw and the door trim comes away easily.

I'll let you know how the rest of the story goes.

    Cheers,
    Tim

Re: GXL Drivers Side Wing Mirror Replacement

    Hello again,

Things went well, then poorly, then ok.

The mirror was $275 from Japwreck. Much better than the $500+ from Toyota. Apparently there are quite a number of private importers of Toyota parts so it pays to shop around when you are prepared to do something your self. The replacement mirror was complete with motors, loom and glass.

I started bolting the new mirror and it went well until I overtightened one of the nuts and snapped the bolt off. So the next 2 hours were spent merging bits from the broken mirror and the new mirror together to make a complete mirror. So the replacement is now on the car and looks good. Nice and clean compared to the old mirror.

    Some notes for the process:
    1. Lower the window. Very important as it gets in the way later and you will probably have unplugged the windows control by the time you realise[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    2. Pop the arm rest upwards to remove it and to make the first screw visible. Remove the screw[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    3. Lift out the windows control. Easiest done by lifting the rear first. Unplug the windows crontol.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    4. A screw the same as the one under the arm rest is behind the windows control. Remove it.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    5. Pop out the cover behind the door handle. Reveals another screw smaller than the first 2. Remove this.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    6. Remove the pop pin at the top front of the door.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    7. Remove the triangle cover above the tweeter speaker. Just pull the top out first.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    8. Pull the bottom of the door trim away from the door. There are a series of pop pins behind the trim all the way down the sides of the door and across the bottom.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    9. Once you have the door unclipped from the door trim lift the trim upwards. Don't get too enthusiastic as the door is still connected to the door trim by a considerable number of cables. You have about 20cm of slack in the cables.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    10. Unplug the wiring to the mirror[/*:m:2h1t4cat]
    11. Remove the three nuts retaining the mirror assembly.[/*:m:2h1t4cat]

When installing the new mirror assemble do not over tighten the nuts!
    Reverse the above to reassemble.

I may have missed a screw somewhere because I found a bonus screw at the end and I was too tired and grumpy to do an inventory against the broken mirror assembly.

    Hope this helps someone else.

    Cheers,
    Tim

Re: GXL Drivers Side Wing Mirror Replacement

Like all things when fixing cars, it goes well most of the time.

Tim, your instructions and the photographs in .pdf above were accurate and very extremely helpful. I have just replaced the mirror unit on my 2003 Prado GXL with a $285 unit. Better than $480 from Toyota.

One thing for those who follow, be VERY careful when taking out the power window unit. Approach it from the rear end, lifting it carefully. Once you think the rear is out, try to ease the front of it and lift it straight up as gently as possible. No rocking or wriggling. The front clip is unbelievably weakly made and I broke mine - now fixed but that's another story.

Everything else is as per Tim's excellent instructions. It took me 30 mins to do the job. Thanks mate.

OK, you do the right thing and fold back your wing mirrors when pushing through some tight scrub. But you swipe a branch a little thicker than desired and it cracks the mounting base. Instructions previously submitted give a good overview. Thought I'd chuck in some pictures to update the how to.
            1. Wind down the window. Remove this clip from forward edge of trim.

            2. Prise window control panel and door arm rest trim. Simply prise straight up.

            3. Prise trim from door release. Simply pops straight out using small screw driver.

            4. Remove 3 Phillips head screws.

            5. Remove inner trim cover of wing mirror. Simply pulls away using flat blade screw driver or trim removal tool.

            6. There are 5 clips on the bottom inside of the door trim panel and 3 up each end. Use your fingers and the panel pulls away easily. Pull from the bottom and work your way to the top. Once the clips have release, lift the trim away from the top edge near the window opening. The panel will safely just hang there without the need to remove wiring looms or whatever.

            7. Undo the connector from the wing mirror loom and undo the 3 nuts using a 10mm socket.. The mirror will now come away from the door frame without effort.

Installation is a simple reversal of the procedure. Check operation of the mirror before re-fitting the trim panels. Ensure that all retaining clips are on the door trim panel before you push the panel back onto the door frame.

Me too - I was stumped getting the door panel off and too scared of damaging it. With the advice above, taking the panel, and fitting the replacement mirror and refitting the panel took minutes, not hours.

                  THANK YOU!
