After a lot of test drives, a lot of thinking reading and a few phone calls to a reputable trans shop I have come to the conclusion that it is the lock up clutch in the torque converter.
When the trans ecu decides it can use top gear to lessen the load on the engine, the clutch locks up giving a 1-1 drive which is better for fuel economy. But the clutch is slipping therefore getting the shudder/vibration until it decides to shift down a gear or you select it manually.
Lucky for me the guy I bought it from regularly sell prados so I get to swap my trans out with one from a lower mileage and unaffected Prado. Which is a lot better than paying 4400 trade price for s rebuild
Until then I have to select 4th when she starts doing it...and as soon as I get this swap done I'll post results
    Hey Saint,

It seems plausible, and as Fred discussed above, he also believes the transmission is the source. I haven't investigated the exhaust mounts yet as discussed above.

    For anyone still reading and pondering about this, there is some discussion of clutch slip here;

    http://www.bankspower.com/techarticl...s-Diesel-Tough

I'll be keen to hear if you have success with a lower km transmission.

I've done 75,000 hard kilometres on my Prado since I bought it second hand, and the vibration has not gone away, but nor has it gotten worse. I've just ticked over 150,000km, and I'm confident it will do another 150,000km with the vibration still there.

If the clutch is worn from this ecu/rpm top gear hunting, shouldn't we see slipping starting to occur under different conditions other than the slight incline and 60km/h conditions that most have observed it???

Why does this occur only for some Prados and not all???

It's great to have a mechanic who is interested in this issue, and I hope you come up with some hardcore evidence!

How many km's do you have on your 08?

Where does one start after reading all about this low shudder issue. I can say after 3 long years and it seems like an endless investigation and upgrades and possible fixes to no avail I did fix my prado 120 4.0ltr 2005 GXL.

Same exact issue. 1100 rpm slight incline 60ks, 4th gear to overdrive, started to shudder bad. have to put it in manual to stop it, (Least it was easy to show mechanics) which it knocks back to 4th. Your right very annoying.

I reviewed this forum 3 years ago trying to find answers. I have pretty much been to every mechanic in town. Discussed so many things it could be. I have spent dollars.

One of the first and most obvious would be the gear box, torque converter, Transmission mechanic of over 40 years took it for a drive and was convinced it was not the torque converter etc, had new tail shaft unis put in, new fuel filters, iridium plugs, Checked coil packs, new steering end ball joints done, new oil in diffs, transfer case, bearings, tyres, engine mounts, the list goes on.

I can understand now that this doesn't happen to all prados but could explain why it happens to diesel engines as well.

My 120 4.0ltr Prado had done 155000 when this happened, clocked over 180000 yesterday.

like I said thought it was under the car. The shudder is the engine.
My son and I checked the coil packs by unplugging each one while running. Noticed drop in rpm except Cylinder 6. Ah no change. Coil pack not working or no fuel. Swapped coil pack around still cylinder 6. OK injector or something electrical. Very strange engine seems to idle and run smoothly. Goes like a cut snake!

Easter 2016 picked up a set of reco injectors, put them in myself. After 3 years and lots of headaches! NO MORE SHUDDER. Instantly fixed the problem
Engine smooth as silk. Went for a long run to Rainbow beach didn't miss a beat, I just can't believe it. I cannot get it to shudder. That's my story, fixed done and dusted. 3 bloody long years.

Not sure how or why, but everything you've said I have checked and done, I just fixed mine after 3 long years. Cylinder 6 had no fuel. Did all my injectors myself and no more shudder. It sounds strange, but worked for mine.

          Hey Saint,

Just a question - did you change your injectors? I have just spent 3 years looking at and replacing a lot of things under the car and having the auto looked at etc. I fixed the shudder over Easter 2016. I Replaced the injectors. It does not make sense but I now feel like I have a 3 year diploma in investigations on shudder. 1100rpm - 60 to 70ks slight incline very predictable. 3 long years and it's gone in an instant. Explanation to why would be good? thinking about that.....

          Kind regards

Mines (2006 V6 Auto) has been doing this for awhile and I had the auto checked including taking the guy for a drive with his diagnostic gear hooked up showing what the tranny was doing (he concluded it was doing what it was supposed too ie. torque convertor locking up correctly and sent me back to my mechanic to get some more engine diagnostics done. Haven't managed to do that specifically because in the meanwhile one of the coil packs gave up the ghost. Had that replaced and I thought it had fixed it but after a few weeks the vibration was back. It also misfires occasionally when pulling away from standstill. So, maybe time to get the injectors checked or replace. Thanks for posting kups.

well i guess is time for me to join "vibration club" as well, (08 D4D, Auto with 175k on clock), it occurs at around 60-80km/h, also vibrates when is cold in gear/reverse at complete stop, also done 2000km trip with a car trailer (1000 loaded and 1000 un loaded), and noticed a short vibration when shifts from 5th to 4th and 4th to 5th. Still not sure what is going on at this stage

Hey guys!, sorry about the lengthy delay in an update but I've been so busy and hadn't check in on here in a while.

                Whitey
, first of all my prado has done now 318000 of which I've done 20k since 11/15 , I have had the vibration since I bought it but I havnt gone down the avenue of a.swap out trans as seems to be a bit of communication breakdown...but i decided I need to do something so last week of did a transmission service, dropped the oil.and the pan replace the filter and flush about 6 litres through it and all I can say is what an improvement it made, the vibration was just present but it was faint and where you expect.it to happen ito doesn't, so I just dropped another 4 litres out tonight and put some fresh stuff back in and now will drive a few days and give an update. But so far so good and I would definitely recommend this service for the sake of a few hundred as for the missing under low.rpm acceleration from.a standstill etc?? I had the same issue I did plugsome, fuel, k&n filter but I also did an intake clean, just used subaru upper.engine cleaner, and since I did the intake service I havnt noticed the vibe/shake so fingers crossed ...as for the injector theory it is totally plausible and I know mine surely havnt been attended to for many years lol so that is on the to-do list
Cheers guys any questions are welcome 🖒

I was thinking to replace the tranny fluid as well, what fluid did you used and how many liters does the tranny take?

                  Cheers

Castrol transmax fe and I used about 10 litres, although I am starting to feel that it's just a band-aid to the underlying issue of the torque converter most likely to be the culprit. I spoke to a mate who is replacing one for a customer at work and found out that there are 2 part numbers for the torque converter depends on which model apparently the number that ends in 050 is the 'rare' problematic one lol (go figure) I'm wondering whether finding a 2nd hand one with the other part number might be a cheaper road to go down..anyway it was a quick chat but I'll find out some more info after he's finished the job but he did say the old torque converter would just spin the clitch packs freely...not a good sign...realistically it's a bloody good excuse to get a transmission rebuild hahaha

Sorry mate missed your message there, no I havnt replaced them yet but Its definitely the next engine item to be looked at but I might just pull em.out.and get them reco'd and give the intake a good solid physical clean out clean all sensors and also I managed to get hold of a set of spare coil packs so I'm going to progressively go through both sets and get the best single set..well poor spray patterns can cause all sorts of symptoms I guess it would occur at that specific load in top gear the injectors spray pattern was weak or abnormal and caused a slight misfire...but that's just a theory otherwise

                        Hi all.

                        11 / 2007 1KD automatic with 180k had the shudder/vibration @ ~1300rpm in 4th gear 50kph and 5th gear 60kph, light throttle.

Installed transfer case damper but didn't seem to affect the issue.

Added one tube of Dr Tanny's Instant Shudder Fix to transmission fluid after warming
tranny to running temp (50C). Instantly eliminated the vibration/shudder (I was listening hard for any signs, nothing discernible.)

Will monitor and report if the vibration/shudder returns.

can i please bump this....Im a brand new owner of a 2007 v6 and 2 days after i bought the car i noticed the overdrive shudder.

happens between 60 to 70 when 5th gear (overdrive/ lock up ) kicks in and shudders through the whole car then goes away by around 70kmph

so far I have done coils and plugs with no change

I dont want to throw tons of money and prefer to point it in the right direction

                          injectors?
                          lock up shudder?

has anyone successfully cured it ? I only have 120,000kms

Are you sure about the gear or speeds?
My diesel auto doesn't get into O/D until around 80 to 85 with lock up around 90. She's done a heap of miles and O/D gets noises happening until road noises drown them out.
Your low K's should rule out anything to do with the auto but higher speed means faster prop shaft RPM's.
My first check would be universal joints. Give them all a grease and the splines.
Grease won't fix a worn joint but it may smooth things out for a while.
Remember the odd joint at the top of the rear shaft has 3-nipples.

Yeh my 5 speed locks up over 60. Revs drop to 1000rpm and shudders till 70. Shudders maybe isnt the right word. It really feels 100% like a missfire but plugs and coils have been changed. I doubt its auto so now im thinking injectors. Or like you say uni or gearbox mount

Torque converter shudder? Per my last post, I had similar problem in my 120 series D4D - the Dr Trannys resolved maybe 90% of the discernible shudder. I then later had the AT fluid replaced (full flush) and new AT filter = no more shudder.
