  • D4D exhaust & chip

G day everyone i hope i am in the correct post but i just cant find many reports on exhausts and chips for the D4D.I am unsure whether to head beaudesert or taipan/DP or Steinbauer and if i then require a dyno tune?Any experience regarding these mods on the D4D would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: D4D exhaust & chip

    Keithy,

I've got a Taipan Exhuast and a Stienbauer Chip.
I had the exhuast done about 6 months before adding the chip and I've got to say the exhaust gave a greater "seat of the pants" improvement then the chip.
So much so that after installing the chip I wasn't that sure it was actually working so I had the Prado Dyno'd to see what was going on. I haven't got the exact results at hand but they were approximately:

Exhaust Only: 10% more torque, 3% more power
Exhaust + Chip: 20% more torque, 18% more power

I've also seen a 1.5L/100km reduction in fuel usage.

When researching chips I found there is a definate lack of information on what variables each chip actually manipulates. In the end I went with Stienbauer because it doesn't increase fuel rail pressure.

There is no Dyno tuning required but it is a good idea, just to check it is all working correctly. Most good installers would include a Dyno run in the installation cost.

I'd also suggest installing an EGT so that you can keep an eye on the exhaust temp.

Thanks Leachy for such a quick response ,you went the way i am tending to lean, i am just concerned about the extra cost for these two products over the other two.Probably not worth comparing quotes as we are at the opposite ends of the country but do you think its worth 3 grand for the power?I am after some gains to tow my van around oz for a year so if i hear enough positive stories i will procede. Thanks again.PS Will also talk to peter at newcastle mufflers SAMO after your recommendation.

        Re: D4D exhaust & chip

        Keithy,

In my opinion the exhaust is worth the dollars. It makes the Prado much better to drive.

I would expect similar performance results from Beaudesert and TaipanXP. The reason I chose the TaipanXP was as much to do with my preference in local fitter as anything else.
I'm not sure about the Beaudesert system, but the TaipanXP system includes a catalytic converter this may be something else to consider.

Where as I noticed the effect of the exhaust across all types of driving, I really only notice the improvement from the chip when driving it harder. So for day to day driving I don't get much benefit but when towing (1000Kg camper) the extra grunt is great -especially good for pulling out into traffic. So for me, whether the chip is worth the dollars depends on how hard you drive your Prado.

I would suggest getting the exhaust done first and see how you find it. If you still think you need more power get a chip.

Do you notice an increase in noise compared to original exhaust system?

there is definately an increase in exhuast noise, it's not overly loud but you can hear a difference. I don't find it intrusive but I also have mud tyres and a full cage roof rack - it may be more noticable on a standard Prado.

              Re: D4D exhaust & chip

i originally cut out the factory muffler in my original system. this made a very noticable difference in day to day driving and also towing. yes, it was louder and you could tell it was a diesel, but i did notice a reduction in fuel consumption and also the turbo lag was reduced. with the original exhaust intact, i would feel power kick in about 1800 rpm, with the muffler cut out and replaced with a striaght pipe, the power came in lower at 1500rpm.

i had this for a few months and now i have the beaudesert. the new exhaust isn't all that much bigger in diameter, but with the larger dump pipe and the mandrel bends, it was revving out a lot free-er with less restrictions. much nicer to drive.

one thing i noticed, was when i cut the muffler out, i was a bit disappointed that i couldn't feel anything different straight up. but after driving around 800km - 1000km, the note of the exhaust changed and i could actually feel a difference. i wonder if the ECU needs a certain time period or distance for it to adjust settings?
same thing happened again from going stock to the beaudesert. i was a bit heart broken when i went for a drive the 1st time, as i didn't notice anything different apart from noise. but having driven witht he beaudesert for about 1200km, the note is nicer and different to when i 1st installed it, and it is now a lot smoother to drive and listen to. the noise is not a lot softer and not as course as 1st installed.

even without the chip in yet, my 120 is much nicer and easier to drive on a day to day basis. noise is not an issue for me. (i have no muffler)

i towed a johnno's camper for a week end on and off road, and you really do notice it. i also towed a tandem trailer with a small dingo/kanga skid steer mini bobcat thingy and it was very pleasant. more torque on tap i suppose, well so it feels anyway.

i will be looking at chips in a few months time. i have been leaning towards the steinbauer, but am still doing my research. wish D-Tronics were still available.

                Re: D4D exhaust & chip

I agree with you about the D TRONIC SIK 120 .I had that chip on a 3ltr patrol and had really good results with it.It was easy to install, gave me more power to tow a caravan and used less fuel.I then sold it on Ebay after we sold the car and believe i was in front with the fuel savings and its resale price.I believe most of these chips are worth the money, i am just on the back foot at present regarding DP chips needing adjustment and STEINBAUER needing to be wired in.I have noticed STEINBAUER advertising a plug and play set up but i havnt found out if this applies to the d4d yet.The exhaust i had on our previous car was made by a local exhaust place and i never really new if it was the best that it could have been. This is why i am considering a reputable brand at a higher price in the hope that they have tried many different styles and are now selling the best note and power that they can produce.
Once again thanks for your responses,KEITHY.

                  Re: D4D exhaust & chip

                  I installed the Stienbauer myself.
The Stienbauer plugs directly onto the injectors, to get to the injector plugs you need to remove/lift the intercooler. It also has a wire that needs to be connected onto the Throttle Position Switch (TPS). The hardest part of this is identifying which of the six wires on the TPS is the connect one (it's in an awkward position). I had the mobile phone number of the Stienbauer Australian Sales Manager who drives a D4D Prado (with a Stienbauer chip fitted), so I gave him a call and he checked his Prado and told me which was the correct wire.
If you do get a Steinbauer and need help identifying the correct TPS wire send me a message and I'll check on mine.
Other than that there is an optional switch wire that can be installed (switches to earth) to turn the chip off. I did bother installing this switch.

Gday boys ,well i finally bit the bullet and did it !Thankyou all for your input.I ended up going for a BEAUDESERT exhaust and the STEINBAUER computer.I had them installed at DIESELCARE at Tamworth with the prado getting a dyno tune and test also.I was interested to watch that when first strapped onto the 4wd dyno how much diesel/fuel smoke was coming out the new pipe! After a bit of a personal moment of panic i then watched the tech tune the car via laptop to the point of perfection. It did take them a little while but after i paid and got the keys the results were fantastic .Results are only very new but the D4D now revs much more freely with heaps more power. The 4 hour drive back to newcastle although long ,was fun as it was an instant test from only coming up that morning and the increase in power is undeniable. The exhaust has a slightly deeper note but is hard to pick and even my wife said the car now feels more powerful. It has only been a week so i have no fuel economy numbers but if anyone else is considering these mods i think they were worth it!

That's interesting 8608. Did you keep the diesel cat?

Would you hazard a guess at how much louder the Prado is from standard with the new exhaust?

Apart from the cash, the main thing holding me back from doing any exhaust mods on the prado is that it gets used a lot as a family trip car both on and off the bitumen. Passenger comfort comes above a few percent of driver satisfaction...

If your talking about the noise factor, well it really is not that intrusive if you go for a reputable system. The benefits far outweigh the cons(not that there is any). Just a nice note and at speed (100-110kms) you cant hear it all.

                            Re: D4D exhaust & chip

i originally removed the rear muffler from my factory system. this made a noticable difference in the seat of the pants department. not sure on power or torque figures.
this made it quite noisy obviously.

i then replaced the factory system with a beaudesert system. the beuadesert systems include the diesel cats as standard. i opted for no rear muffler at all, as i didn't expect it to be any lounder, but with the increased diamter of the dump pipe and the system in general, it is louder. extremely loud under boost/hard acceleration, but with normal evryday driving, its bearable.

i now have a steinbauer chip fitted, and noise levels are about the same, but the power and torque is crazy wicked. i normally have the steinbauer off unless we are towing, or loaded up. the extra power and acceleration is too much for me... to drive slow. i just can't help it. plus, it uses heaps more fuel when its on. (i had my chip custom mapped for me with higher output figures and totally disregarding fuel economy) according to the wife, as she drives it daily, the very next mod is upgrading brakes.

Sounds like a Beaudesert or Taipan with muffler might be the go.

Are there any issues with extra heat or reduced clearance between the road and the exhaust with these systems?
