    Re: extra fuel filter

Thats is a very neat installation there rob_macca67

My filter is a bit bigger than yours, so I made up a bracket to hold it off the guard, and I also plumbed mine in before the OE filter. I got hold of four 2 micron elements very cheaply from the states, so that is what I am using. The elements retail at over $80.00 here!!!
With fittings, fuel line and element, the whole unit cost me about $150.00. I am happy with that.

Here is a picture of the setup I have now.

        Re: extra fuel filter

        Thanks Bert.

Yes it is the Racor 445 assembly with a 2 micron element. I didn't need to go with the 445, as obviously it is duplicating the
existing OE primer, but it was available at a good price, and does the job admirably.

          Re: extra fuel filter

I have looked back at the other posts and i dont think this has been asked... so the Racor 230R with 2 micron filter is a very good choice to remove water and anything else the OE wont get,, but a 445 unit is better still, or just on a par with the 230R. I am a butcher, not diesel mechanic

            Re: extra fuel filter

            Gadday Meatman,

the Racor are among the best filters in the market. the basic difference between the 2 are:

the 230R (R20S cartridge) has a flow rate of 114 ltr/hr with a clean filter drop of 0.31psi. dimensions are 9"x4"x4" weighing 2 lbs. it has 3 ports with built in primer.

the 445R (R45S cartridge) has a flow rate of 170 ltr/hr with a clean filter drop of 0.17psi. dimensions are 9.3"x4.5"x4.8" weighing 2.5 lbs. it has 4 ports with built in primer.

in my opinion. both are adequate although one may be tempted to think the 445 has a higher flow rate therefore, change the filter later. that's debatable as it depends on the cleanliness of the fuel and how well you want to protect your engine. For the 150, i think it is neither here nor there. in the end i went with the 230R with 2 micron cartridge as i can get the R20S cartridges much cheaper then the R45S. in the long run, it's the consumables that's going to cost. it got it with 3 spare 2 micron cartridges for a total of $200 + $35 to have it TNT to me.

            hope this helps.

              Hey Bert,
That sounds like a great deal, I've been scouring the web (local and overseas) looking everywhere for a good deal, where are you buying yours from?
              Thanks

                Re: extra fuel filter

There are a few dealers in the USA that sell through eBay. A few links below as examples.
As Bert has stated, be aware of ongoing consumable costs when selecting your assembly, and go for a unit with a high flow rate.
You will also need to factor in costs such as:
                • Tail ends to suit assembly
                  Good quality fuel line
                  Good quality hose clamps
Fitting hardware, and fabricated bracket if required.

The job itself only takes an hour at most to do. Getting the parts together takes a bit of effort though.

                  hey Rob 31,

i have mine picked up by my brother who then couriers it out to me. that way, the item is checked before shipment.

if you're interested, i'll have him send another set. hopefully exchange rate remains same. just pm me.

                  cheers,

                      Hey ##########,

I read with interest, your replies, and have found it informative and educational. thanks.
with BP, their Cetane index values are typical 51, 46 minimum.- typical of big companies staying ambiguous.
i'll try the additive you suggested. is there a particular shop i can get it from?

                      Best,

I have also read ##########'s posts with interest, and have valued the advice given.
I have used additives in my diesels for many years now, and have posted as such on this board.
                        I presently use Pro-Mar Dt5. http://www.pro-masystems.com.au/prom...0042&MenuID=86

I bought 5 litres of the stuff.... a bit over 1 years supply for me. I notice better fuel economy, and smoother/better engine performance.

Well, I'll be.....their web site states 46min (52 typical) after all, this supports the theory that in NSW all fuel comes from Caltex....well at the end of the day BP warrants their fuel, Caltex does not.

Hi people,I have settled for a Racor 120R-RAC-01 filter mounting with the S3227 filter 10 micron with water bowl trap at 126 liters/hr for $62.00 with fittings .I also ordered 2 replacement filters for $36.00. plus postage which is pretty high $60.00 .I have since found there is a guy selling replacement filters (Sierra) $36.00 plus $17.00 postage here in OZ. Hope this is a help to you .
I'm not sure about different diesel fuels can someone enlighten me what that is .I understood there is only E type and normal diesel fuel ???? Cheers Foxy

Thanks ########## ; Mate I always had the intention of using an extra fuel filter for insurance purposes as I also so do with a bypass oil filter as truckies also use them as that helps them to achieve huge kilometers before engine overhaul. So it seems BP diesel is the way to go unfortunately I'm in the country and I don't have one close by but when I go to the big smoke I can fill then Cheers Foxy

Foxy, FYI Shell have a similiar warranty to BP (check their web site) if that helps
