  • Rear air suspension question for Kakadu owners ???

Does anyone else hear their rear suspension being raised occasionally (every second day or so) when you drive off..Mine has sometimes started to raise and its quite noisy when my wife and I set off to go out...this may just be part of the self levelling feature but not sure as to why it may have gone down a little.

Re: Rear air suspension question for Kakadu owners ???

    Hey Kakadaz,

I can't comment specifically on the Kakadu, mines on order and due for delivery in June. But I do have a 2000 model Holden with rear self leveling suspension. The pumps aren't designed to kick in every time there is tiny change in load, otherwise it would be pumping up and down with every hole/bump you drive over. There needs to be a sustained change in weight (putting a trailer on, fat guy gets in the back), or it will reset/level every time the ignition is turned on and then it will pump up/down. You could have had someone in the back seat last time you drove it? Perhaps some luggage in the back. You will prob find the the pump comes on every time you stat the car, you just don't hear it cos of the engine, doors closed etc. Being air, it will also leak a bit over time.

I'd say it's perfectly normal. But in any case, have it looked at under warranty so it's logged with the dealer. If it fails outside of your warranty, can can always try and claim it was a pre-existing condition that was never correctly diagnosed by the dealer.

    PS - Slick ride!

I have a new Kakadu and have never heard any noise from the suspension. I would get yours checked out, I have had 7 people in my car and heard nothing.

It seems very rare it does it and thinking back the last time it did it all four of us were in the car so will keep an ear on it for now but note it at first service.

If its like the 120series Grande it sounds normal behavior although you shouldnt be able to hear it.! If you take notice when you pull up next time, turn the car off and jump out usually after 10-20secs you will hear the rear dump some air and then settle. They are quite sensitive to weight as even my dog jumping in the back will make it adjust, so if you then take that load out when you stop it should settle a little. I'm also convinced a more aggressive driving style will make it add some air at times too.

Where is the compressor? Could there be an issue with the compressor not being bolted on properly?

I have the 120 Grande and when the compressor is going, there is a slight whirr and I can feel the slight vibrations through the brake pedal. But nothing alarmingly noisy.

Is your self levelling turned on ? I think it can be in the off position ? Worth checking..

I have only heard mine when I am connecting and disconnecting the camper trailer, but this is only because I am at the back of the car. It can't be heard from inside the car as It is not very loud at all, just a loud hum for raising and a hiss for lowering. I have found it is a great way of levelling the camper trailer before putting the jockey wheel down to disconnect.

I am not sure where the compressor is.

Mine is now sorted...I had toyota check it when it was in for its first service they said all good. I asked the service manager if that very loud noise is normall he said it must be because the mechanics have ticked it off. I got home and got underneath the car only to find when I put my finger on it it went dead silent ???? Turns out when it runs and vibrates it was touching the chassis so you can imagine what that sounded like so I packed a small piece of rubber between the chassis and compressor...hey presto dead silent...F*%k you Toyota for not even checking yet saying its all good.

Thanks for this post. My Kakadu is a week old and was thinking the noise can't be normal. People stop and look when it's running! I'll be crawling underneath today. I was worried about finding it but I am sure the noise will guide me!

If it's touching the chassis it must have a bent bracket.

So much for finding by noise. Haa. I can't find the compressor. Must be near the petrol tank bash plate as that is making a lot of the noise. Can anyone send a photo maybe for dopey me? Keep lowering it, then hitting the raise button and jumping underneath with the torch but just can't nail it before it stops every time and I start the cycle over and over.
