I need to replace my plugs and I also only run 98 . Why are these plugs so good? Where do I get them from and how much?

these plugs have yet to be tried and proven in my rig .. but from what info i gathered to make this choice.. was mainly because this is a race plug generally used in config. with modified air fuel ratio's. forced inductions and high performance engines...

i picked up up a point from researching this that the jap motors like denso's plugs... keeping in mind their are many members on this site and the vehicles in the states running the 1GR- FE with many types of plug brands , some had issues .. some don't ... thats the unproven bit .. but i found enough reason behind the argument to stick with DENSO..

next was the plug choice... ALL denso plugs to suit 1GR-FE

          Iridium Power is recommended for
          the following kind of user.
“I want the next level of response and power for my baby”
For drivers that care about performance.
By using a 0.4mm diameter iridium alloy center electrode and a special ground electrode, IRIDIUM POWER realizes spark performance unseen until now. It steadily gives a high level of response under a variety of driving conditions. The result? Increased acceleration and torque compared to regular plugs.

“It’s the car that I drive every day, so I want less fuel consumption.”
For drivers that care about mileage.
If you use your car on a daily basis, you may be concerned about fuel consumption. IRIDIUM POWER is one solution.
          Ignitability That's a Cut Above

With DENSO's very own U-Groove ground electrode for better spark performance
To increase ignitability, the important point is to let the flame kernel caused by the spark to grow to a large size. Normally, this can be accomplishing by widening the spark gap, however this causes spark voltage to increase, which has the opposite effect. IRIDIUM POWER uses DENSO very own U-Groove ground electrode to realize a superb ignitability while maintaining spark voltage at low levels.

          Improved Horse Power(1)

Get more power with an optimal combustion cycle.
IRIDIUM POWER has a low required voltage and a high ignitability, resulting in less misfiring and no spark, the outcome being a dramatic improvement in combustion. Engine output is thus increased. The findings of a bench test using a motorcycle engine to show the improved combustion from IRIDIUM POWER is shown on the below. Compared to normal plugs, a 0.5ps (1.4%) improvement is seen in output at 110km/h.

          Improved Acceleration

          Increased response and acceleration performance.
IRIDIUM POWER best demonstrates its performance improvement during acceleration.IRIDIUM POWER has a 0.4 mm diameter iridium center electrode and a specially shaped ground electrode. These features combine to achieve higher ignitability and require lower spark voltage than ever before. This enables high-response driving with fewer misfires than under higher required voltage spark conditions, and fewer misfires when ignitability is difficult. As a result, acceleration improves in comparison with normal plugs.

          Improved Horse Power(2)

The 0.4mm center electrode increases output under various driving conditions.
The power produced by the 0.4mm dia. iridium center electrode is IRIDIUM POWER unmatched by other plugs. The graph below compares the resulting power when IRIDIUM POWER is installed compared to other high performance plugs. Using a 0.4mm dia. fine center electrode, there is more power compared to 0.8mm and 2.5mm dia. plugs. This is what makes the difference in acceleration and in your lap time.
          Improved Fuel Mileage

Even during idling ignition is assured, with less fuel consumption and less noise.
The good ignitability from the fine electrode (0.4mm) of IRIDIUM POWER draws out much more performance from the engine. Comparing a normal plug (W20FS-U) with an IRIDIUM POWER(IWF22) on a 2 cycle 50cc engine, fuel consumption improved from 41.74km/L -> 43.69km/L, an improvement of about 5%.
Note: Mileage measured using a chassis dynamo; actual driving results under normal conditions may vary.
The Secret behind DENSO's Iridium Patent!

Plug electrodes conventionally have used nickel and platinum. These were not pure metals, but alloys containing other metals. Depending on the composition of the alloy, the matrix material's properties can be maximized. Using the same approach, iridium is alloyed with rhodium. The rhodium layer covers the iridium, improving the properties of the iridium. This iridium/rhodium technology was recognized by the Patent Offices of Japan and the UK, and in January 1999, a patent was granted in each respective country. (Patent Number - Japan: 2877035, UK: 2302367). Because DENSO had this patented technology, DENSO was able to make dia. of the iridium down to 0.4mm.
The most important things for plug performance are ignitability and sparkability. To make the electrode as fine as possible is the goal of spark plug manufacturers worldwide, and DENSO has taken the lead, succeeding the commercializing the 0.4mm dia. center electrode plug.

The finer the electrode, the more concentrated the electrical potential and the stronger the electrical field strength becomes, leading to a lower required voltage. This results in a steady combustion in a variety of driving conditions, and better starting and acceleration for the engine.
A Pattern from Spark to Ignition.

Electrodes have a quenching (cooling) affect (where the heat of the ignited flame kernel is taken away by the electrode). This cooling affect is greater with larger electrodes, sometimes causing the ignition to stop short of the stage in Figure 4. To improve ignitability, the contact area between the electrode and the flame kernel must be reduced. Improved ignitability is why IRIDIUM POWER electrodes have been made fine as possible....

there is alot of pretty pitchures etc.. and all the reasons why it is suppose to be the ducks gutz.. but i will be replacing the standard exhaust system soon from the headers right through... i'm hoping being a race plug.. it will suit the 98 fuel ,,, noted that other PP members comments about the engines management controlling the fuel mixture on the variations of ron 91, 95 and 98..

after the headers i'll be running 100 cats through a 2 1/2 system... so the race plugs should be a good investment/compliment for future mods.. now the price
my local toyo dlr offered me platium plugs for $18 ea. the "power" plugs where very hard to find in australia so found the plugs on ebay in the states for 6 plugs $49.22 + $10.77 postage... sold just hope its knocks the fuel consumption down .. will let you now the results when they go in ok... hope i didnt waffle on too much ...

            Hey butane

Mate that was an interesting read thanks.. It all sounds really good and I too one day was planning on changing the exhaust system to exactly what you said also..

I'd be really keen to hear your feedback about the plugs though and if you think they are good ill also get a set.

Can any damage be one by putting in the wrong ones?

hi paddy , these plugs are spose to be changed at 20k intervals,, dont seem to be a long life plug but its taken me 3 yrs to put 20k on my prado , i hoping if all the promises are correct ... i'll save a fist full of dollars and wont mind changing them more often.. as far as damage goes .. unless you over tighten them on instalation.. the heat range is same as the other plugs.. they are not to be regapped on fitting.. leave alone.. as set by denso.. plugs can tolerate small variations of set gap.. cant see a reason why it would cause a issue
evan tho i cross checked the spec. of the plugs i'll still size it up when then old ones come out.. but it all looks good on paper..

well i cant wait for em to turn up and throw em in ... it'll let you all know how they go.. it should all be positive..
              cheers butane

              P.S
go to the Q & A on that denso site theres plenty of comparisons and info about different issues regarding plug choice , worth a good look

oh paddy one good point i forgot to mention is the low milage facter is thought to be the reason why mr toyota has gone for the long life plugs over efficiency of the power plug.. must be changed more often..

                  Hey Butane

I'll jump on their site and have a look. I don't mind replacing them every 20,000 of they are worth the money.

What website did you get them from so I can jump on and buy a set myself..

Look forward to seeing how it goes when you get them..

bout as close to the subject as i can find... easy maintenence tip when admiring your rig .

crack a can and pop the hood...
walk around the front and lift the hood up
air in let tube on the drivers side guard has a water trap hanging off the bottom.
its rotates and lowers for cleaning....

mine was found today all blocked up with dirt and clean in 45 seconds flat.

replace water trap ... look at motor while you drink can of beer...
return inside and tell the missus the car is locked... lol

got the prado warm, the sarvo then went for a run .. it has changed they way I'll feel the response of the donk to ,be more evan accross the the rev range..

[based on feel / acceleration of a low rolling 2nd w.o.t]

the stock plugs with seem to have a dullness till about 2800rpm. then the V6 got bang and its a nice punchy feel. all the way till till you catch it for third gear.. before the red...

here's the feed back bit.. the race plugs seem to evan out the whole range... it feels like that supprise i used to wait for is gone..
i"ll be honest , i used to love that power ban feelin.. the low end of second was more responsive that i found my self looking for third much earlier than b4. look at the tacho and am blowing out that the exhaust note i used to listen for is gone ... i mean gone

its really hard to bullshit about this as it is a stock motor

evan with a few wots in 2nd from the mid range in the 50/60 k speed.. was very pleasing ... this upgrade is ,

for some one who doesn't mind putting a new set of plugs in .... often... postive direction for me...
