  • Handbrake Grief

I know we all get frustrated with the handbrake but the one on my '97 Prado is giving me serious grief!

I replaced the handbrake shoes which were worn down. When finished there seemed to be too much slack in the handbrake cables. I replaced the cable with a new one thinking the old one may have been stretched but the new one is just the same.

With all the adjustment taken up at the handbrake, I can just get the LH wheel to lock but nothin reliable. I have checked everything back against the manual including that the shoes and new cable is correct. I have double checked the shoe installation and tried varying levels of adjsutment at the shoes, but there still seems to be too bit too much slack in the cables.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any ideas?

    Re: Handbrake Grief

    Hey bushtreka,

If it helps you to know your not the only one then i"m with ya, haven't got too much help but cause I have new shoes and adjustment on the shoes and cable are as tight as possible you have the little thing you adjust through the backing plate which pushes the actual shoes out and then also a little rubber pad on the back of the backing plate with pulls the slack out of the mechanism then on the actual lever in car for cable right... My handbrake is far less than spectacular but I haven't replaced the cable but which I probably stretched trying to get it to work before I checked it over. I can't see anything more you can do especially if you have replaced the cable... there is a link here which basically outlines the manual from memory but have a look anyways

Have you adjusted the shoes through the hole in the break drum till they binde up, then back them of till the the drum turns free, this should fix the problem.

I'm finding that I back them off enough so that they don't rub and I've got too much slack, it's pretty fiddly I've decided mine is near enough

Try buying her flowers. By no means a long term fix but it should keep her off your back for at least a day.

                Re: Handbrake Grief

I have a similar yet different problem.
I replaced my shoes thinking this was why my hand-brake was next to useless.
I found that the adjusters were pretty much all the way in. So I slackened off the cable adjuster at the handle, which was wound up as much as it would go (mechanic's solution). Then I wound out the adjuster at the shoes to the perfect spot on both wheels, and hand-brake was awesome. But within a couple of weeks it has gone useless again. A check at the shoes shows the adjusters have wound themselves back in. Since I have no hole in the backing plate, it is a caliper/disk removal process each time I need to adjust them, which as you can imagine is a PITA :x

Is there a way of keeping the adjusters set without using lock-tite ??

                cheers

I find that the blue medium strength lock tite is strong enough for most jobs but will still break free without too much effort, maybe use it sparingly the first time
