I originally bought my 02/2005 Prado with 42000kms on a clock at back in December 2006. No engine issues to date, however I've replaced the starter motor in 2012, and I'm ready for 3rd clutch. Started towing a 2.4T boat around from Sept 2009 and replaced the original clutch with a extra heavy duty one at 180000kms. I'm currently at 353000kms and looking to either upgrade the vehicle or buy a new clutch and keep it for a while longer. As I mostly fish alone, I'm under my GCM but not by much.

Just hit 450k with mine. Starter motor got replaced about 5k ago and the front bearing / crankshaft balancer seal is gone but still a while to go before the oil leak gets too bad. Other than that all pretty good so far. I bought it 10 years ago with 145k on the clock. Friends said I was mad buying such a high mileage car but I sure can't complain.2003 V6, Auto, GXL, Factory Bullbar, Rhino Roofbars, Bosch and Hella spotties, Cooper AT3, Bilstein shocks, Ironman awning, GME UHF, MaxTrax.

I own a 2003 GXL. I’ve taken it all around the country including Kakadu National Park about a 1000kms out from Darwin.
just clocked over 350000km. Engine going strong (has a small oil leak on left side of engine housing ?timing over location - mechanic says it’s not a problem). running so smoothly it’s crazy, still feels and drives like the day we got it back in WA 17 years ago.
Here are the major issues I’ve had to fix so far;
270000 km - new starter motor (fixed for $350)
320000 km - radiator leak (at a corner weld join it looks like) - second hand radiator bought for $88 + $220 labour/fluids
350000 km - major transmission leak (blown seal with broken torque converter) replaced the entire A340F + transfer case with a second hand transmission for $500 + about $1000 of labour + new ATF fluids including flushing of all lines/transmission cooler lines.
17 years on and a total of $2500 of replacement parts.
Am very happy with both the car and the ready availability of cheap spare parts from wreckers to keep her going!

Heat cycles play a huge role in engine longevity. Those falcon taxi's (or any vehicle doing a similar job) will likely have a very long lifespan with minimal engine problems as they're constantly running and typically serviced regularly- Contrast this to an engine that gets started up for a 15 minute trip 3-4 times a day to drop the kids off or do shopping that is getting turned off shortly after warming up to operating temperature.
