  • Bullbar mounted UHF Antennas

    Hi Guys,
I know there are a couple of old posts regarding broken UHF antennas on the sovereign Bullbar. I have just returned from a trip and managed to break my second one, so I am in the market for a replacement. Has anyone any recommendations as to any UHF aerial that will withstand corrugated roads better than others (or does it come down to learning to live with the punishment the sov bar dishes out)? I don't want to move the aerial to another part of the car, so i am hoping someone can suggest something.

have a look at the Bushcomm stinger http://www.bushcomm.com.au/index.php/buy/online-shop - probably the most robust UHF aerial available but not cheap.
Another option is SCG Scalar http://www.zcg.com.au/. Again not cheap.

      Thanks Leachy,
I'll look into these two options.

Tim, I have mine mounted on the rear door frame right hand side. I'll post a pic this arvo when i get home. I have been between Cairns and Weipa maybe 10 times in 2years and it hasn't shifted or damaged any antennas. When I get to town I change it over to a stubby to get into carparks.

          pics now included:

Did you know there are a number of aerials not recommended for Diesels? Not sure if you have one but the vibration at idle is enough to weaken them. Its usually the single solid wire ones with the coil two thirds up that suffer breakages at the mount.

Just something to ask if your looking for a robust replacement.

no affiliation with any of these, just googled 'UHF aerial suit Diesel'

            http://www.lakecomm.com.au/uhfant&acc.html

            & a quote from http://www.lets-getaway.com/CB_UHF.htm
There is also a ‘vibration factor’, which can fatigue the antenna, for vehicles with diesel engines as well as road surfaces that needs to be taken into consideration when selecting an antenna. The fiberglass whip aerial on a medium or heavy duty spring may best suit 4WD diesel engine vehicles and outback travelling.
            Cheers

After having my fiberglass whip last me 3 different vehicles and 150,000kms including over 30,000 off road it finally snapped while up the cape
In wiepa the guy at the radio store told me that those metal whips where the only way to go and would last heaps longer than the fibreglass. Well it lasted less than 24hrs and 250kms, and the roads weren't even that bad  that was a waste of $22 bucks. I have since bought a couple of spare whips, at $30 bucks a pop if i break one every few years, who cares as long as i carry a spare.

              Cheers Andrew

                Re: Bullbar mounted UHF Antennas

Thanks for the replies - some good info to digest.

I have a petrol and yes there is a spring mount. Normally the aerial is fine for most offroad, but these longer dirt roads seem to take a toll. I have tried the stainless steel wire and also a fibreglass one, so it might be time to invest in a much heavier duty one for the next trip (it'll probably still be waved around like a mad magicians wand, but hopefully it won't bust), or failing that might need to look at relocating the mount to a different location on the vehicle which i am trying to avoid (thanks toddy for the pics).

i don't do a lot of the heavy corrugated stuff, but it becomes an annoyance when another whip becomes a bug on the windscreen.

                Thanks again,
                T

I find the roofrail mount works well and as they say in RF 'height is might'

                    Re: Bullbar mounted UHF Antennas

A GME wire one with the coil in the middle lasted 1/2 hour on CSR! One on another car lasted one day after he taped it up after seeing mine go. I had a 4' long 6DB GME fibreglass whip [thin] which lasted the rest of the trip [about another 5000 km on dirt] without problems. Most of the other regular desert travellers used " broomstick" type antennas. Neil

I used to have a white GME fibreglass job but it kept getting smacked by tree branches and finally shattered.

Now I have an RFI that has a spring mount with a rubberized centre section and thin wire upper. It bends easily and isn't fazed by the bushes. The mobile phone is an RFI job too, similar spring base and fibreglass upper but bends better.

I've been looking at getting a UHF soon so thought I had better do some reading on what sort of antennae to go. I am yet to find out what the real differences (i.e. performance or longevity wise) are between fibreglass vs steel antennae are, and surprisingly I can't find any real answers online either. The brands of antennae I've been looking at include Benelec, and of course GME, as the UHF I plan on getting is a GME. Anyone got some additional thoughts/advice to the above for antennae?

I have an Icom 440 radio paired with a GME 4702 on a heavy duty spring. Its a fibreglass areial and does a good job. The 4702 is part of a series of aerials that fit the heavy duty spring base so when I am in town I replace it with a cheap stubby aerial in case someone tries to adopt it.
