  • Big Flex - Here is what you need

After some time of trial and error I've ended up with what I consider to be excellent flex out of the prado

    Front
    1. Extended travel Icon Coilovers (Sourced from USA)
    2. Light Racing Upper Control Arms (Sourced from USA)
    3. Diff Drop (Sourced from USA)

    Coilovers

    LR UCA

    Diff Drop

    Rear
    1. 4" Tough Dog Big Bore shockies (from 80 series LC)
    2. Drive shaft spacer
    3. Extended brake lines
    4. Coil spacers (already had these in for the 3" lift)
    5. Coil retainers + Cone retainers
    6. Extended bump stops

Drive shaft spacer (sourced from superior engineering)

Extended SS braided brake lines, approx 3" longer than standard (sourced from USA as they were half the price of locally made lines)

To retain the cones and the coil spacer in the correct location I used zip ties

Coil retainers... started off as zip ties but I decided would break sooner or later so made some out of strap metal

I already had 2 x 15mm bump stop spacers from the previous shocks, this time I swapped the actual bump stop for a hilux one which was 20mm longer...perfect

And this was the end result

I have a mate making up some adjustable upper and lower control arms + panhard rod to get a little extra flex as i have about 5mm left in the shocks

I should have some footage in the next few weeks out at the 4x4 parks so we can see how she performs

Re: Big Flex - Here is what you need

That certainly is some impressive flex you have managed to get, just a few of questions.

Have you removed the swaybars to achieve this?
If so what effect on stability?
You have removed your front mudflaps, is something fouling on them?
The diff drop kit, i have noted a few of these on PP. is it just a couple of 1" aluminium spacers on the front mounts? what do you do with the rear mount point, or do you do nothing at all and just flex it on the rubber and change the angle of the diff?
Are your rear springs just normal 2" lift with top coil spacers?
What overall lift have you achieved now? you mentioned you previosly had 3".

      Cheers Andrew

Yes I have both front and rear swaybars removed. With the rear swaybar out you can't even tell the difference, but the front is noticable but still feels very safe to drive.
Nothing was fouling on the flaps, but I kept breaking them off every time I went offroad.
Yeah just 1" spacers with some longer bolts on the front, the rear stays as is otherwise the drive shaft would hit the cross member. Effectively gives you half an inch as you're only tilting the diff down at the front.
I run HD Kings 2" in the rear with 20mm spacers.. gives me 850mm measured from the bottom of the rim to the flare, which is just over 3" from standard
Lift height hasn't changed, just the amount of flex I have

That is impressive. The rear looks to be on par with a 90series now

Re: Big Flex - Here is what you need

You might want to try some flat bar of at least 5mm for the coil retainer bracket.

And check your brake lines, you may find the U.S ones arent ADR approved, which could be an issue for insurance, our regs recently changed, and the newer fittings are much stronger, especially where heat related. [and the new type fittings are of course, dearer.]

Nice Work, out of interest why didn't you go the Icon adjustable UCA? Couldn't justify the extra US$500 or were you worried about the uni ball longevity, from what I've read and been told they are meant to be best for freeing up down travel?

Yeah it was cost issue, if I had the extra $$ I would have. Not only is it another US$500 but you would also get stung duty/GST as it's over $1000AUD. In the end though I still flex to the bottom of these shocks anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think 5mm is necessary of the coil retainer? I flexed her up over the weekend out on some tracks and I couldn't see any strain on what I'd done.

I'm getting the front brake lines made up locally so they should hopefully be ADR approved.

I take it you never got the Extended travel shocks? If not that's pretty nice front drop! I can;t wait to kill these TD and get some decent gear!

I went abit silly with the credit card and got the icon uca's and remote resi's. This has given me a full droop of 890mm so only an extra 10mm over double_d69's setup.

Yeah I did, the flex another inch (at the wheel) further than the standard ones.
