    Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

I dont really get it - Why only Soverign bars on prado's?. No matter what type of bar is on the vehicle (ARB, TJM etc), wouldn't they use the same mounting points?. All Prado's with a bar should get a recall.
    just my thoughts.

      Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

Yes, all bull bars mount on to the front of the chassis, with some form of steel bracket connecting the chassis to the bar. However the steel brackets (or crush cans) that Toyota used for the Sovereign bar which fit between the chassis and the alloy bar are thin, poorly made and will crack along the fold lines if the Prado is driven over a lot of corrugations. When the cracks start, the bull bar moves around a little more. Worse the cracks get, the more the bar shakes around. Eventually it will fall right off!
No surprise that I was told by the dealer a year ago that the company that made the Sovereign bars is no longer in business. Wonder why?

And that is exactly where mine cracked, Hullbyw, on CSR corrugations. Neil

mmmmm - I wonder how much pressure are on these brackets (crush cans) when useing a winch mounted to a sovereign bar??
Potential failure point?? (especially if some cracking is evident :!: :!: )

            Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

Phoned the dealer where i bought mine to ask about the recall of sovereign bull bars .

They said it was not a general recall but it would be inspected if there was a problem being experienced.

Next time its in for service will get them to check it out.

Mine is booked in to be done on Monday week at Stewart Toyota in Sydney. The service bloke says they have the parts and all Sovereign bars on Prados and Toyota steel bars on Hiluxes are to be done.I showed them the cracked one I took off a few months ago and the bloke said the new ones are of thicker metal. We shall see in a week. Neil.

                  Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

I called into my local dealer here in Tasmania and asked about the recall. They were quite surprised  that I knew about it as the letters had not been sent out yet. Just told them I have friends 8) who are in the know. Once again Pradopoint is ahead of the dealers here.

I asked would I be getting a letter and after confirming the VIN number was told I would be so will book it in very soon. I will be asking for the old ones so I can see the difference and keep as spares in case ,

                    Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

Picked up my new crush cans, plus new angle iron style braces (to replace the weak round tube ones) a big bag of nuts and bolts, new air bag compliance sticker and instructions from local Toyota dealer this afternoon (service guy could not have been more helpfull - very impressed) . My sovereign bar was removed from the Prado some months ago when I decided that the welded up crush cans were not going to survive our planned outback trips this year, so that is why I picked the parts up rather than having them installed. The new parts will go with the bar when I sell it
The difference is huge. The steel is about twice as thick and the folds have been replaced by large radius bends. If I had of known Toyota were going to bring these parts out I wouldn't have changed the bar over to the ARB Deluxe.
If any PPointers do any offroad work at all I would strongly recommend that you request that the dealer replaces your old Sovereign mounts with these new ones. Just hope the poor bloke that left his Sovereign bar on a dune near Big Red after it fell right off will be able to claim something from Toyota.Reckon they should install a whole new bar for free.
Maybe after all the recalls Toyota has had worldwide, they might be starting to listen to their customers. Never know, they may even start to talk about cracked dashboards!(the service guy did ask whether I had complained to Toyota about the Sovereign mounts but alas I had not. I just got pee'd off and bought a second hand ARB Deluxe instead)
                    Cheers....Wayne

                      Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

My 07 GX went in for some other reasons and when i went to pick up the car it wasnt ready. Basiclly they are replacing the mounts to stronger mounts and braces. It dosn't matter its still a s--t bar and shakes just as much. Save up some money and put something decent looking on ARB TJM Opp Lock. CAN'T WAIT  I am the second owner and if i hadn't taken the girl cruiser in for other reasons i would be none the wiser. I must say the dealer was great and couldnt do enough for me Noel Barr Toyota Thanks Jay!

                        Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

MWB50, you may well be disappointed if you do save up some money and put a different bar on. As mentioned on PP many times, the shaking is not so much the bar but the soft body mounts to the chassis. So part of the shaking you see is the body moving in relation to the chassis. However all my 4wd mates agree that my Prado now looks way tougher with the ARB Deluxe bar than it ever did with the Sovereign bar and as the CB antenna is now mounted low rather than on the top bar it oscillates a little less on the corrugations.
                        Cheers

                          Re: Sovereign Bar Mount Recall?

Thanks hulbyw I can understand the soft body mounts giving the illusion of the bar shaking more, but i am looking beyound that. I have already lost one s/steel whip antenna on my first trip north. I have now fitted a fibreglass whip and as it is a lot stiffer the whole loaded base vibrates much less and actually moves as one instead of moving like a hoola dancer. Another reason for fitting a after market bar such as ARB is it provides much better protection for those vunerable and expensive aluminium radiators. Those lower front stone guard would help too act as an effective brace and every bit helps, also when entering wash outs etc the better ramp angle would be of a huge advantage. As this vehicle is a whole lot lower than my old 80 (which is still parked in my garage I cant bare to part with it ) every little bit helps. Cheers Blacky
