  • Why is that, I fitted a winch fitted to the old style mounts no problem, did use the genuine Toyota winch plate and fairlead roller plate though.
The winch plate transferred across to the new style mounts with no problem.

They are extremely weak just today someone posted about their bar falling apart https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...ereign-bullbar

It seems a winch was an afterthought by Toyota with these bars, and you are looking at $600 just for the brackets that should of been on it in the first place, then $150 for a fitting kit with the nuts, then $200 for the cradle so you are $1k deep correcting Toyota's poor engineering before even buying your winch or considering labour if not doing it your self. If you try and get the bits second hand more often than not there will be things missing like the side plates, or chassis pins etc both which cant be purchased separately. Then hopefully your second hand mounts arent tweaked causing the bar not to line up.

I've bought what i thought was everything including a whole second bar with post-recall mounts only to find our its missing side plates which cant be bought. So now i've got 2 sovereign bars, fittings, pre recall bracket, post recall bracket and still missing 2 bits of metal which is a show stopper. Dollars out of pocket, and weeks of screwing around and still no winch setup in sight.

Just not worth the hassle and expense for a bar that seems only designed to bump shopping trolleys out of your parking spot.

      • The brackets where found in a few places to have failed so Toyota recalled them and replaced, if the owner was to lazy to have this done then you can't
blame Toyota for it. The cradle was smart engineering, if you didn't need a winch then it significantly lowered the front end weight for those that only want
the bull bar without the winch. It can be installed for those that want a winch whereas at the time if you brought another brand of bar without a winch then
wanted one you would have to replace the bull bar with a winch compatible bar. You can't really blame Toyota if your buying second hand bars and bits are missing or it doesn't line up, never had any issues lining my unit up. Honestly sounds like bad planning on your part, first thing you do when purchasing second had parts is make sure you know what should be there and make sure the second hand one your buying is complete else as you found out it will cost you money.

If your considering a steel bar I would be looking at the weight closely as the load on the front axle is marginal with the alloy bar and winch
fitted. If you fit bash plates, dual battery, roof rack and rock sliders it will be well over with just two in the front.

It's got nothing to do with being lazy, my vehicle was taken to Toyota like clockwork for servicing for the 9 years of its life before i got it. They didnt do any of the recalls for the bullbar, towbar, cracking dash, leaking injector seals etc. Were happy to take thousands in service fees and replacements parts, didnt mention the free stuff.

No issues with fitting a cradle, $200 for 20kg of fabricated steel is fine. $600 for 2 bits of steel for the mounts and another $150 for some nuts and bolts which should of been done under recall is taking the piss.

Not blaming Toyota but the whole situation is a bit of a mess, multiple part numbers and dealers telling people the parts are not available, parts you cant buy separately, so many people have been caught out with missing parts like a chassis pin or side bracket that's why theres a 27 page thread and a lot of confusion, someone on the previous page is missing the side brackets just like me. Seen the alignment bad on so many bars after fitting the recall brackets, people have been back to Toyota 3 and 4 times trying to get it shimmed right if you read this thread.

If your happy to drop $1k plus a few hundred labour on some brackets and having Toyota get the bar winch ready great. But for the same money you can get a triple loop steel MCC bar fitted for example, which is stronger, better clearance etc then sell your sovereign and get half your money back.

          • Ive never had a problem winching from the original mounts on my Sovereign bar.

Ive winched and dragged my Prado on its belly approx 6m after high centring in the middle of a mud hole without any issue, also winched people out on the beach several times.

Maybe I've just been lucky. I just went out and looked at the mounts, definitely the older style.

Im running a Runva 4500 winch, which is approx 2500kg capacity and has never let me down.

Clearly if i can skull drag the weight of my Prado through and out of a mud hole, it is more than strong enough for my application.

            Just saying....

Not sure but don't think the recall was related to a problem related to winching, it was to replace the crush "cans" or crush zone between the car and the bull bar. It was a recall to put in different crush cans as the original ones showed issues in crash testing (not sure what). The only winch cradle you can purchase since the recall only fits to the new mounts - forcing you to get the new mounts as well.
