  • D4D Aftermarket Exhaust, anyone got one???

    Hi All,

I was under the VX the other day while the engine oil drained and looked at the exhaust as standard, whilst a neat and tidy job, it is quite small in dia, and knowing a turbo loves nothing more than zero back-pressure, I am keen to look at an aftermarket system to suit, prefer stainless, but will look at anything, I am even tossing around breaking out the tig and building one as I have a new 5" od 3" id metal cat and can get free stainless tube/bends as required, really only need to buy muffler and resonators as required.

    Any info would be good.

I'm running 3" TaipanXP system. Dyno run showed a 10% increase in torque with just the exhuast mod. and much beter to drive.

      Hi,

Thanks for the reply Leachy, how is the sound of the new exhaust? I don't want any drone, I have had other systems on cruiser, although non turbo, and they droned so much it drove me mad.

I would hate to spend $1500 on one and have to pull it off because it was too noisy.

Can you hear the difference in the car, or just the turbo spooling up etc?

      thanks again.

My system is defintely louder than standard but not to the point of being intrusive. I have a full cage roof rack and crusing at 100kmh the rack is noiser than the exhaust. The only time I can hear the exhuast is over 2500rpm.

We have had good power gains by just chnaging the muffler, and fitting a Steinbouer unit, getting within 3-5 kw of a good aftermarket full exhaust, and the same as some snake branded exhausts.

$270 vs $1280-$2000, and the muffler makes no real difference to noise.

Thats interesting Darren. I wonder what effect just replacing the muffler would have on EGTs? Its common knowledge that a full exhaust system with a nice big dump pipe can reduce the EGTs by over 100 degrees. In theory any increase in flow should bring a benefit, but I wonder how effective a muffler replacement would be?

              Very effective.

Our dyno results have proven it on many models, over and over again.

If I had a 120, 150, hilux, pathfinder, navara, etc I would do the muffler and a tuned Steinbauer, and know its within a couple of % of as good as it needs, for about the same money as some of the exhaust systems alone out there, or less!

Re: D4D Aftermarket Exhaust, anyone got one???

I've got a Beaudesert Exhaust full system fitted, my car hasn't been dyno'd, but they're suggesting a 10% increase in torque.

Irrespective of numbers, the car certainly tows better, it hangs on longer on a climb, is smoother to drive and doesn't drone, I'm happy.

There may be a small decrease in fuel consumption but it isn't much.

The resonance or vibration inside the car at 1500 rpm has decreased too.

I haven't put a chip in but I am considering it.

I don't have an D4D aftermarket exhaust but I recommend a full exhaust systems which might help you with your exhaust problems. You can get one from racepages.com.

Considering an exhaust upgrade as well. Been hearing a lot about Beaudesert exhaust but they manufacture 2 3/4 tubing while Taipan says 3 inch is better. I'm confused. Is it also a must to fit a snorkel? I don't do water crossings and dread the possibility of a rust problem in the future. Thanks guys.

Sorry I don't have a full system, but I have replaced the muffler with a hi-flow lukey stainless and it is a great... Feels smoother and easier to apply the throttle.

I would recommend changing the muffler first and then if still un happy the whole system.

I don't think i would notice any greater performance for replacing the remainder of the exhaust, it looks quite good, stainless and nicely bent.

Pretty sure Sean is right, most of the Chip companies recommend a larger exhaust, more power comes from more fuel, more fuel equals more heat, larger exhaust will get rid of more heat and allow engine to breathe better.

There are a number of us on PP who have done the muffler replacement only and have obtained great results - do a quick search and you'll find a couple of results.

I would also suggest that you try cutting out the muffler and replacing it with a free flow of the same diameter as the existing diameter.
                          $200 as opposed to $12 - 1500 for a system
