Anyone got a picture and diagram of the plugs on the gearbox that need to be removed? Obviously can see the ones on the pan but which ones on the side.

It's up the side and further back. Doesn't look obvious when you first take a look.

It's on the drivers side, about half way up , from memory it is 24mm and has WS marked on it.

2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

That is the one. Not very obvious. Funny though to see the oil topped up/replaced through the little bottom level plug hole... with a 300ml syringe. Phil

                I second this.

If you've done a lot of hard km's on your auto, don't just flush it, replace the pickup screen.

There is at least one driver on fjcc (FJ runs the same auto) who burnt his oil and clogged the pickup screen with broken down colloidal muck, and starved the torque converter. $3000 replacement.

The pickup screens are cheap from Repco, you can even get oem through Dubai Amayama for around $50. Toyota parts in Australia will charge you around $200 for the pickup screen and the filter.

Penrite advise not to get WS or LV over 100C. If you're hitting those temperatures, you'll need to consider a larger cooler.

I've ordered a Ryco transmission filter kit (Part No. RTK 138) from SCA and planning to have a crack at the transmission in the coming weeks.

What torque are each of the nuts meant to be tightened to?

Should I use a sealant when replacing the transmission gasket? If so, what's the recommended sealant?

                  Cheers in advance!

If you meant the oil pan bolts then they should just be tight and snug. Ideally with a 1/4" ratchet and a 10mm. As for the gasket, Toyota doesn't use sealant so why should we. I wouldn't either. Just use what comes in the package.

                      Hey,

I only just saw this so a slow reply, but....

Be extra careful with the pan bolts, they can easily be seized. Their torque is only 4.4Nm, note the decimal point!

You can't use sealant down there, the ATF will eat away at it, use the genuine Toyota gasket!

                      • Thanks all. I ended up paying a professional to flush the ATF, replace filter and gasket - first time the AT has been serviced on this vehicle (Nov '07 D4D, 180k). As a bonus the ATF service appears to have mostly resolved a torque converter shudder at low rpm (light throttle) in 4th and 5th gear.

Great to hear it solved the issues.

Can I ask roughly what you paid for this. Toyota (in Perth) have quoted $380ish I think was the price when I last rang them for a flush only (that included oil).
