[QUOTE=PradoLover;273910]I have a Kakadu. There still is nothing out there that is any better than the Grandtrek 18 inch OE's.

VX,(18inch) Here here, Our grandtreks have been awesome. so good on the road, We have done so many loaded Ks, in the outback too, Dalhousie, any dirt we could find out there. Nearly 60K they are almost unmarked, the spare has never been seen. Fuel economy is fantastic as is handling and road noise. Am i positive I can get an improvement? No.
I am hoping for a pleasant surprise yes

I updated the tyres on our VX late last year, I was looking for an increase in side wall height as we do a fair bit of travel on sand and the taller tyres bag out a bit better.
I found these options all in 265/65-18,

Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10 - $300.00 each available locally
BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/AKO - $530.00 each available locally (Light Truck rated)
Cooper AT 3 - $400.00 each if I import them myself

I went with the Coopers and after 10,000k's I'm very happy with them.
The 265/65's are roughly 25mm taller, they don't rub at all and the speedo is now accurate when compared to a GPS

If you go the import route there are heaps of options in this size.

I have the Cooper Zeon 285x60x18's and so far their very good. Good on road and very good on wet roads but also very good off road. The standard 776m is now at 800mm with these and my speedo is 100% accurate.

I haven't got them yet, but when I get a chance I will be going with the Mickey Thompson STZ P265/60R18.

They are the same size as the factory fitted Dunlop's...

          Cheers,

I'll be needing new rubber in the near future and will look more closely at the Hankooks at that price. They seem to get some pretty good reviews in the US.

Any PP'ers running the Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10's?

I Have the Cooper Zeon 285x60x18's x 5 on the Kakadu have done 20k rotated 4 times and the ballance up near true 10 to 15 grams. the wheel cove fits on but you have to remove the S/S lach from botton so that it doesnot rub on rear bumper you hold on cover with the bolt only. calibrated the spedo via the maintenance screen under tyres you can reset speedo. I had the dealership swap out the 18s for 17s and have just discovered that they rub on full lock. extremely disappointed.

                  Babs

I purchased a second set of tyres and wheels - 17" Speedywheel avalanches with 265/70/17 MTR Kevlar Goodyear Wranglers. The wheels are +25 and the tyres give you about 13mm more height which disappears once you deflate.

Tyres have been great and make a real difference with the increased footprint for different terrain. They have been tested and they are pretty tough and reliable. I recently changed the hubs on the camper trailer and purchased another three of the same so they can all interchange.

The tyres came first and did Cape York in them (OTT and Frenchmans) - without a lift. I recently got a 2inch lift and UVP installed - all combined it makes a hell of a difference.

I can't help with the cover, I leave it off when I run the 17" and put the garbage bag on.

Have fun with your build and travels.

                  Keeper

Hay Keeper do you have the same clearance issues I do, or does the offset fix that entirely?

I changed mine from the first day to a Cooper 275/65R18 in the AT3 and they are fantastic. Just got back from the Canning and the Tanami and Oodnadatta and a lot in between without a single puncture or problem. They have done 25,000 so far.

Toyota have advised I can't run 17s on my VX due to the KDSS and swaybar. They have offered to replace it with 18s and cooper tyres.

Anyone got some advice? I feel there is maybe a steering adjustment that can be made to stop the rim from grinding on full lock to the left.

That's no good, Bob. Perhaps you need a wheel with less offset but same width (7.5"), i.e. say +10 or +6 instead of the factory +25 offset.

You might be able to increase the bumpstops ???

I didn't know you could recalibrate the speedo like this. How did you do yours exactly?
