  • Weird clutch noise (HELP!)

I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, so I can kinda work out how much $$$$ I am going to have to spend.....

When I start my car, (its manual), there is this air sound coming from the clutch area, when I put my foot on the clutch the air noise goes away and becauses this weird squeeking, almost grinding noise. The clutch hasnt been slipping at all and has not got heavy (I know this because my partner rarely drives the car so he would notice if it had).

I took it into Toyota today as the noise was really loud. They said they looked over it for 30 minutes (that I doubt very much), and they reckon my clutch is really heavy. They say that my clutch is about to go and it is going to cost me $2500 for a new one (thats including labour). I have only done 83,000kms so its still under warranty, but this may not be under warranty and right now with my wedding being only a month away I really dont need/want to fork out $2,500!! :?

Has anyone else had this problem?

If your clutch is shot.... No, Toyota will not cover it under warrantee.

$2500.00 to replace a clutch....... tell them they’re dreamin.
I am not aware of an aftermarket clutch kit being available as yet, but if there is, I would be going down that route. If you have to go genuine, I believe the Toyota clutch kit for the 1KD-FTV is around $1300.00 inc.
A mechanic will charge around $300.00 or so to fit it.

    Good luck.

If the sound is a sort of chirping noise, I think it is likely to be wear in the clutch throw-out bearing. I don't believe that this, on its own, indicates imminent clutch failure.

You would be wise to get other opinions, eg from independent (non-dealer) mechanics.

If the noise is there before you put your foot on the clutch, my first guess would also be throw-out bearing.

Is the clutch slipping? Do a third gear uphill test - drive at around 50kmh uphill and slip the clutch with power on. If the engine races and doesn't return to road speed when you take your foot back off the clutch, you have a problem. (don't fry it, just test it)

Have you driven through deep water and mud? This is the most likely reason for a throw-out bearing to start playing up. Remember this is a 4WD, you shouldn't drive it off the bitumen LOL

In my experience, you could write everything most Toyota service personnel know about clutches on the back of a postage stamp. Find an independent service guy to take a look, they'll be cheaper to replace the throw-out bearing and/or the clutch if it is required.

Good luck with it, and best wishes for the wedding!

Its not slipping at all, no matter what the conditions are that I drive it in. It drives fine.
Today the noise isnt even as bad as it was yesterday, so now Im even more confused!!

We got a price from a different place for a new clutch fitted, $1350 for heavy duty or $1100 for a standard clutch.

Wedding is more important right now so I will just drive it until it wont drive no more  We own a tow truck so I can always just tow it. 8)

And thanks for your well wishes.

Turned out to be the release bearing. 8)

I have an intermittent "chirping" noise from the clutch. Well, I think it is the clutch as when I press the clutch pedal just a small amount, the noise disappears. It seems to surface mainly when I am towing. Is this the thrust/throw out bearing? Will it cause issues? Can I just have the bearing fixed? Should I wait until the next service or have it fixed more quickly?
