If it helps the M/T dealer near me said the big difference between the two was the noise levels with the STZ's being alot quieter. The owner of the store had a set of STZ's going on his own prado. If they had 18" versions I would have bought them but went the Cooper Zeons which have a similar HYbrid design and couldn't be happier.

          Hi All,

I am now starting to look at changing my rubber on my 120 series from the OE Grandcraps to Mickey Thompson's.
What current update is there from members who have had the STZ's fitted?

Also, is 265/65/R17 the only size available?
          What is the tread depth?
          What is the Mileage Warranty?

I ask as the MT website doesn't have ANY Info on the STZ's available.

I am looking at either the STZ's or the ATZ 5 Rib, as I don't do enough Off road to justify the ATZ 4 Rib.

          Please advise

My STZ's have been on the car for about 2000km now, and they are a great tyre. Around town, there is the slightest of "hums" when driving on smooth bitumen, however given the fairly aggressive tread pattern, it is really next to nothing. (There is far far more noise from the doors when any windows are down, for instance). With the windows up, there is no change in noise at all.

No sign of wear yet. Grippy in wet and dry. Only tried them on dry (but steep) 4wd tracks so far, where they performed effortlessly.

I'm quite glad they come in a matching size to the originals (265/65R17) as I didn't want a taller set of gears than are already on my manual V6. As a result, the car performs pretty much exactly as before, with respect to acceleration, etc.

No measurable difference in fuel consumption either so far, even though they are a LT tyre.

Off to Cape York on Friday, for 3 weeks, so I'll report back after that with more detailed information!

I have been looking around as well, from what I have found out so far the STZ has a slightly shallower tread depth and I think the mileage warranty is less, not too sure about the sizes though. One thing I did find was that the STZ was a fair bit cheaper than the ATZ.

I have the ATZ 5 rib at the moment and have been extremely happy with them, looking at the 4 rib for next time, just thought I would try something a bit more aggresive in the tread pattern.

Found this in a MT Catalogue I downloaded. Whether all sizes are available in Aust is uncertain. Hope this helps though... (Click to Enlarge)

OK - back from Cape York (yesterday) so I can now report the STZ's are a fine tyre for all but the muddiest conditions.

For highway (wet or dry), sand, dirt roads, rocks, etc they work flawlessly. Treadwear is acceptable and there is still no apparent noise from them.

For soft clay (CREB track on a rainy day) they fill with mud more quickly than a Mud Terrain tyre does, and therefore ultimately have less grip, however for the few times I'm going to be in that position, I'm very happy with these tyres.

Cape York trip report has now been posted...

                    Thanks for update Rob.
These are on my preferred list now. Correct size and in an LT - all looks good. Spec sheet says 80% on road - 20% off road, but they look more agressive than that.
Your report seems to back up the "looks".

Just wondering how they compare with the BFG's - any comments or thoughts out there?

                      Thanks in advance...

                      Rob,

Rob, you might be interested in the review of the STZ I wrote for Amazon and other sites:

"Since I've lived in Alice Springs for the last 23 years I've tried a lot of different tyres for my bush work, driving 600,000km over vast areas and a multitude of conditions including all but one of our deserts. I've personally found that "desert duellers", for instance, are no such thing, and by any number of others passing through here that many Cooper's tyres fall well short of the advertising hype, especially with the rubber compound. Worse, when something does go wrong they trot out a pre-prepared list to try and blame it on the customer and their famous "guarantee" is virtually ignored.

So it was with trepidation that I looked at Mickey Thomson's for my Prado after I discovered that they were made in the Cooper's factory in the U.S. Anyway, I'd always thought of Mickey Thomson's as "pretty boy, city boy's" tyres. Lately I've run BFG mud terrain T/A s on my troopcarrier and have been very impressed, but that vehicle does more dedicated hard-slog work, for the Toyota Prado I wanted a compromise AT tyre. I looked at BFGs but the company in Australia were totally disorganized with 900 of the Prado size tyres I wanted on back order from the U.S. and still weeks away. I was seriously upset as tyre choices are far more important to you here than in the city. As I was due for a vehicle inspection the old tyres wouldn't pass, then immediately followed by a serious desert trip, I had to think quick. You can't always get tyres off the shelf here in Alice, it can take several days to get what you want up from "down South".

After a lot of research I decided on the Mickey Thomson Baja STZ for the Prado in the 265/65/17 size. They were a new model tyre and were literally being unloaded from the shipping container when I spoke to the guys in Adelaide about them, they'd been recommended to me off the specs by Lindsay's Tyres in Melbourne. Well b#$%ger me! They were good, really good!

I didn't want to write a review too early but after my first 18,000km I am very impressed.

Of that 18,000, 3000 would be in and around town, 4000 on the highway constantly at 130 (or so) km/hr (we can do that here!) 11,000 off road on various jobs from the deserts down here to the Gulf and the Top End. Mud, sand, rock, corrugations, water crossings, high speed bitumen, nothing really phases them. I inspected the wear marks on the tyres again this morning and it is negligible. No cuts, no compound heat break up on the tread from constant high speed, sidewalls as smooth as a baby's bum. It still has the little rubber fingers sticking out as if its new. Now, remember it is winter here, but I was still getting 30+ degrees in the Gulf and Top End. Things can change with heat especially on bitumen and in sand, but my gut feeling is this tyre is not going to disappoint in the Summer. They are considerably cheaper than BFG equivalents but easily match them on performance. I might even go further than that in my next review post-Summer. I wanted to give it a 4 and a half coz nothing's perfect, but it only let me choose 4 or 5. But it's better than a 4, hence the rating! If you are looking for an all terrain compromise tyre for your 4wd, when you combine value and performance, I am yet to find better than the Mickey Thomson Baja STZ."

Best I could get was $350 each!! But that's hervey Bay... not a heap of competition. Went with Geolander G0-12's happy with them so far. but only a few hundred k's.

Are the G0-12's a LT tyre or a passanger construction?

Hey i also bought the GO-12's 3 weeks ago. To answer your question, yes they are LT. Yokohama's 4wd Road Hazard Protection warranty, on paper, looks pretty good. To qualify you need to buy 2 or more and from Bob Jane or Tyres&More. If in the first 25% of wear you stake, cut, get impact fractures or accidental kerb damage and the tyre cannot be repaired, Yokohama will replace the tyre free of charge. Between 25 to 50% wear if the tyre can't be repaired (free of charge) the tyre gets replaced at a pro-rata charge. I hope all that makes sense
Bob Jane, by the way, were the cheapest and i made a dozen calls to tyre shops.

Provided you get them rotated every 5000kms from them I would say... that is what I think I was told on the day... Mine have done 50+km and wearing awesomely. I dont think I could find anywhere where the GO12's state they are LT construction.

The Yoko website dosn't specify LT or Passanger. I was hoping for a pic of the sidewall to confirm construction type.
