  • I need to change the van studs to match the Prado nuts thread and then I can use the Prado nuts. Either that, or just use some chrome Speedy ones. Looks like I'll have to use those chrome caps too as the stub axle intrudes too much to use the Prado caps. Constant maintenance to keep em from rusting though. Can't do much right now as I've buggered my shoulder for a couple of weeks. I guess I'm in for a bit more googling to find alloy nuts and caps.

      Job done

I abandoned the idea of finding fancy chrome caps as I couldn't get any to fit and once I've given the stub-axle caps a spray of silver it'll look good as new. Might even go mad and give the whole hub a spray. Better than the crappy chrome things. They should be water tight anyway.

I was going to change the studs but opted to use Ford nuts to suit the existing studs and slid a couple of washers onto the collar of Ford nuts in lieu of the flange on the Prado nuts

Thanks everyone, esp amts for your advice and input. For the first time, I have interchangeable wheels. - albeit not perfectly matched but close enough to keep me going.

      • Hi guys, a bit like Cloud above I am trying to get Prado 120 GXL Wheels to fit my IRS Jayco. A guy in the eastern states has been a real help in showing me it can be done with exiting ALKO IRS Axle on the Camper. Clearance on bot sides of the tyre is very limited, so need to make sure its close.

Problem is, he is running 80 Series Sahara 16x8s, so the Offset has got me confused. I think the 80s run a 0 Offset. The 120 Prado GXL is 17x7.5s run POS30 I believe.

So, help me, will they fit? :P

        • One of my first posts on the forum. This weekend I installed my new tires and rims that required some modding to avoid rubbing under some circumstances. I bought FJ Cruiser TRD PRO rims from the US that came in 17x7inch with ET04 offset. That in combination with the oversized and square Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 in size 265/70R17 with no lift and stock front bumper, caused the rubbing under full steering lock, especially when reversing. The rubbing was both to the front and to the back of the front wheel wells, so it could not be solved through just an alignment. The lesson is that +26mm (~1") increase in offset with square tires one size up from stock already requires some work on increasing the clearance in the front wheel wells. Luckily, this proved very easy and it is almost completely irreversible (for us that are naive in assuming great resale value). I believe the work required should not withhold anybody to go for a similar combination of rims and tires. I reallocated the front fender liners, trimmed small pieces from the bottom of the front bumper with my pocket knife and secured the play in the mud flaps by adding a tie rib through a dedicated hole I made with my knife. I mostly used 4runner forums as sources of advice. Have a look at my build threat in case you think this can help you avoid rubbing in the front wheel wells (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-limited-Build).

          • I am looking for a spare wheel for my 2016 gxl prado, found a steel rim running a 265/70/r17 whereas I have 265/65/r17s. My question is can I use this different size 17 inch tyre as a spare if needed without damaging the running gear of the prado. Looking at Oodnadatta track in July and wanted 2nd spare.
            Cheers

Na mate the 70 profile tire has a larger diameter, therefore further distance travelled per revolution and not compatible. That's exactly what I'm after for a second spare though as I've upgraded my existing 5 to that size.

                • Have found a wreckers in Ballarat that have a few 150 series Prados and they will sell me 17 inch Prado alloy and tyre from an earlier 150 series that is the same diameter but a bit narrower. Same wheel studs so can use current wheel nuts. Can anyone advise if there is any issue with using a slightly skinner wheel as a second spare, hopefully not needed but want to be prepared just in case.

Sounds like the GX rim which is 6.5" wide and has a different offset (+15). It will get you out of trouble. If it has 245/70R17 tyres, then it will be almost the same size as 265/65R17.

The narrower tyre and different offset may not affect straight line bitumen driving much but once you start swerving, then it's a guess whether the ECU will accommodate the different tyre or not.

                    • Ended up getting a 265/65/r17 unused Goodyear Wrangler tyre and Prado factory rim for $330 which I thought was pretty good value. Looks to have more solid tread that current Dunlops so will put the existing spare and the new spare on if I have a puncture. Now to hope the tradie trailer camper can handle a slow lap around Meerinie Loop and Oodnatta track.

Et55 is no good. Reduces the track which is illegal and not what you want. And if they are fitted with 265 wide tyres, it won't go on.

                            • Hi all, great thread too. I have read through it all and just checking..... I have an '05 GX which has the 7.5 steels and I run the 265/70/17 and i am finally changing to some alloy's. The Speedy Buckshot 17 x 8.5 with an offset of 20.
So just double checking but this will be fine from my understanding?????????????

                              Cheers.

                              • Edit - problem solved! Finally found a 2nd hand original 18in Kakadu rim and tyre on gumtree for a very reasonable price

                                Hi guys
just a quick question, (yes I have done as much homework as I can)
Will a 2010 GX prado alloy 17x6.5 265/65/17 +15 get me out of trouble for a second spare for our Prado Kakadu 2015 running the standard 265/60/18's
It looks like it would be the same (within a mm or so) rolling diameter and fairly close offset. Is there anything else I am missing?
Amts was very helpful a while ago, but I cant find the email!
                                Thanks in advance
                                Ben
