I enquired today and was quoted $1,100 for a Piranha system and $990 for a ARB system at a Sydney based 4WD shop (fitted).
I had expected about half of that; (D4D) What's realistic?

Absolutely agree. You also learn more about your vehicle and will be 100% sure the job wasn't rushed, which can lead to a poor installation or broken trim (such as clips).

I used the pirhana battery tray , that way in the diesel you can fit a full sized n70 sized battery. The petrol has a powersteering pump in the way. I also got the dual battery kit and isolator from sidewinder. I had this set up on my previous 150 and had no problems.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

I paid a 4wd outlet to install my accessories expecting a professional job and wasn't impressed. Next time I'll be doing it myself

Looking to install an auxiliary battery myself to a D4D 150.

After checking numerous threads my shopping list contains:

Redarc Sbi12 Isolator Kit ($240 on Ebay)
                  LeighW diode/fuse ($35 on Ebay)
Optima D34 Yellow top (ca. $260)
[Optima D27F seems a bit heavy (24.5kg) and is much dearer]
Battery tray TJM ($130?) - they seem to fit well, so should be worth the extra $$ ??

Adds up to just under $700, Is there anything essential that I forgot?

I have just about finished a dual battery install. Just have a fridge point and extra cig points to install inside. I did do one 12 months ago by paying a reputable firm to do it for me. I wasn't happy with the price, the finish or some of the breakages. So I priced this one out fully and did the following. Brand new Redarc 1220 off eBay for half money. Battery tray off the net cheap and installed while the kids were at soccer training one day. Deep cycle from Autobahn that didn't break the bank. Did something different this time and put a new fuse box near the original battery downhill of a resetting breaker. Then I ran a trailer five wire into the passenger foot well following aerial leads with each wire having its own fuse. Bit anal I know. Also ran an insulated double wire to the rear for the fridge. New battery and Redarc share a single wire to the resetting breaker. Came up looking good and pretty simple. Save hundreds.

New Build - Brand new 2012 Prado 150 GXL D4D 6 Sp Man White Cleanskin delivered Early July. Let the rebuilt commence. Old - sold $54k 4/2012 due to job change. 2010 Prado 150 GXL D4D Auto White - ARB Bullbar White, Warn XD9000i Winch, Dual Battery + Dc/Dc Charger, GME TX3340 UHF, 40l Engel Fridge, 60l water bladder, 12V marine fuse boxes front & rear.

I'd actually recommend you buy the isolator and wiring separately. You an pick the isolator up for about 60bux new off ebay on a good day. Also, the wiring in the kit seems to be a fixed length. I'd recommend you make your own cables or buy them custom made at ABR Sidewinder. Drop a message to Derek, he'll look after you. I bought my cables custom cut and terminated from him, they're worth every cent. High quality, shrink wrapped and loomed.

Also, you if you plan on doing wiring to the rear cargo area, you're going to need to add a few more things to that list of yours...

                      Cheers

EDIT: Oh yeah, you're missing a 12v LED to indicate to you in cabin if the isolator is on or not.

right, the list needs to be longer for the wiring, which should include
                        12v LED (Narva?!)
                        12V Accessory Sockets,
8B&S Cable (i.e. 5.5mm) from engine bay to cargo,
                        Split tube,
                        Fuse holder and
                        6mm Auto Twin Cable.

Something like that? Should be available in any supercheap auto and the like?
How long, William did it take for you to do the work?

12V led can be found at ABR Sidewinder too, that's where I got mine from anyway. You're going to want a fuse or breaker on the wire that goes from the aux to the rear cargo bay too.

I actually did the install in two goes. First was the dual battery, then second was the wiring to the rear cargo bay.

Dual battery took a couple of hours, it was literally a matter of dumping the battery in and connecting up a couple of leads. Most time was spent clearing the aircon pipe from the battery and tidying up the cabling with cable ties.

Wiring up the rear cargo bay took a bit longer as it required a lot of trim pulling. This took especially long due to my lack of experience in that department. A tip I'll give you is to be rough but firm at the same time, the trim clips will come off just when you think it's about to break. You also have to drill a couple holes into the trim to get the wiring into a compartment that houses the fuse box.

As for availability, I bought most of my wiring bits and pieces from ABR, the battery from Repco and the rest from ebay (including the redarc).

Here are a few pics from when I installed mine:

One trick that I learned after doing mine is that you can pull the rear drink holders out to help pull the cables through at the back.

You'll see some clips on top of the plastic radiator cover that are used for running the factory fitted second battery cables on the European model. Much easier and neater than running cables around the firewall.

Also on the large rubber cable plug on the engine bay wall you'll see a small round grommet that can be cut off which provides a small hole to pull cables through. I bundled about 12 cables, allowing some spares for future use, greased them with dish washing liquid and easily pulled them through together.

That helps a lot. I am actually quite scared now of ripping off the trim (feels very firm) off the sills and the radiator (to connect both batteries), going through the firewall for the wiring to the rear and for LED.

You don't need to take the trim off the radiator. There is a channel on the plastic towards the engine designed to take the cables. There should be some photos if you do a Search.

If you need to the 13 plastic clips on the radiator trim are released by pushing the tops down first.

The only bit where you need to be careful is pushing cables through the Firewall. Easiest if you find the small nipple on the large cable plug and push a hole through that, avoids cutting with a knife.
