When the motor is running, turn on your A/C, an see if the pitch of the noise changes, if it does, you have found the problem, I would then advise you to remove the belt for the A/C, the engine will once again be quiet, and then when you have enough $$$$$ replace the A/C compressor.
What do you think?

Get some of this stuff and use on belts. Works a treat. Its what we use in the trade and its not messy like the sprays.

It sounds like I might have the same problem. I talked to a Toyota mechanic and he reckons it might be one of the idler pulleys. First step will be to remove the drive belt and start the engine to see if the noise is still there.
Can anybody tell me where the tension adjuster is to remove the belt. Also a drive belt diagram so I can put it back on.

hi, Ive had the same problem with my 1997 prado ,after pulling all the belts off it turned out to be the aircon adjuster pully starting to sieze up. the adjuster bolt is underneth the pully so you have to remove the bash plates to see it, (first loosen off the centre bolt). You can pick up a new bearing at repco quite cheap .daveLast edited by dave0074; 10-06-2011, 04:53 PM.
