  • Need Help! odd Noise--97 Prado Grande

Hi guys, one week till now, I have noticed that there is Shrill noise coming from my engine room. When I look up the engine room, it sounds like the Shrill noise coming from any one of front fan wheels. You know there is common sense that any wheel rolling without lubricant then it just sounds like that. But I can not make sure that is the problem. Cus it just like what I felt. I have no idea about the shrill noise from and cause. My question is does it really matters? Can I leave it like this till next service time?

Is it constant or only on acceleration?

I cannot hear any noise while driving. Only when I lift up the engine cover, I could hear it clearly. I think that is constant for sure.

I'd be getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Might pay to pop into a service centre for them to have a listen...

Just seems strange for a loose belt to be squealing constantly with no acceleration. Have managed to see what the contact surfaces of the belts are like? A belt that has been constantly slipping should be quite shiny and hard.

Alternator or A/C pulley bearing maybe... too tight a belt can cause undue stress on these. Have these been adjusted recently? No other suggestions available from me sorry...

Hi Bassmouse. Use a real long screwdriver with a plastic handle. Place plastic handle to ear (either one will do - ear that is) and carefully touch down the blade and press hard to area around where you suspect the noise is comming from. This gives you an effect like a stethescope and by moving the blade of the screwdriver around you should be able to pinpoint the source of the noise. Take a bit of care with moving parts or things could get a bit exiting. Cheers.

It would be the A/C pully bearing, I had the same problem a couple of years back, it turned out to be cheaper to replace the whole compressor than replace the bearing, the compressoe from Toyota was only $600.

Thank you for all the ideas. I have decided to see the mechanical today. BTW, I've just test it this morning. I found that that noise no coming at the beginning (when I start the engine). However, when I push the accelerator one or twice, then it happens. If that was A/C pulley bearing problem, does it really matter?

We had a terrible noise once. It turned out to be A/C pulley bearing. Was cheap to have replaced. Could be any of the pulleys.

Hi guys, I got it checked this morning. The mechanical guy checked every fan wheels and belt. He said' nothing loose' and' A/C pulley is stable too'. He is the guy who done my timing belt replacement last time. He also told me' nothing loose behind the front fan wheels(means ' engine inside'.). Now, I am really confused. Cos it just sounds no right. When every time I start the engine no noise at all. However, when I give accelerator a couple of times pressing,it happens till I turn the engine off :-(
