    Gday,

Ive looked at this site a while now so its time to post a few things. Will post some pics of the rig later.I do have a couple of questions if anyone has the time to answer.

Ive got a 95 series world cup with 2 inch ome lift cooper stt,arb bar ,ipf lights, uhf, dual batts.
1 )The timing belt was done at 150k but she is now on 250k ...do I wait until 300k to replaceIt??
    2) It smells of burning oil when I stop. It uses about 1lt over 10000km and no oil is on the floor so it must be burning off on a manifold or similar.Any tips???

    Thanks guys

    Pete

    1) Think you'll be right until 300k with the timing belt off memory. If you still have the service manual (should be with the owners manual) just double check in that, says everything that needs to be checked at intervals.

    2) take it to a mechanic asap. burning oil could equal burning car (worst case scenario).

Also you'll need to whack your location up in your profile

how long ago was the belt changed? if within the last 10yrs belts now do 150

what oil do you use? maybe too thin. 20/40 or 20/50 should be it. current oils are too thin 0/30 or 10/30
      Thanks guys

Oil may be seeping out from the rocker cover gasket. Re: the grade of oil, I'd opt for 10W40 over 20W40 as it has the lower cold viscosity.

          Thanks for the replies.

The belt was done at 150k in 2003. Have searched the toyota manual and service book but i cant see it there.

I degreased the donk and the smell stopped for a week or so. perhaps a leaking cover?

Where you the owner when the belt was done ? if not and it is not in the service manual and you are only going by what the previous owner is telling you then I would replace the belt.

my 95 series says to do the timing belt at 150K. If it was dealer serviced then if they put their stamp in the service manual give them a call to check to be sure.

                  Timing belt change

I realise I am replying 6 months too late, but for the benefit of others questioning their timing belt - inspect it! Just remove the top timing belt cover (with the 3400 label) via its 6 or so 10mm bolts, then twist the belt. If the belt is shiny with little cracks, replace it!

I bought my '99 3.4 Prado with 184 000km on the odo with mechanic stamped servicing up to 180k, INCLUDING the 150k service that specifies timing belt change. The shiny old timing belt had many small cracks, including one nearly 1mm wide that ran the width of the belt. Either an inferior, faulty belt was installed, or more likely the fraudulent mechanic stamped the 150k service without doing all the work. Thankfully I replaced the belt before it snapped.

For the record, the 3.4L v6 is a free spinning engine. So while you will be stranded if the timing belt brakes, the pitons are not going to smash into the valves and destroy the engine.

Me thinks it is time to go have a look at the belt!!

Depending on model as to when Toyota specify the belt be changed, series one 96 to 99 due at 100,000, get the series two 99 to 02 then it will be done every 150k, BUT the funny thing is ring toyota and ask for the part number and there the same part numbers for either model. As mentioned above Id be checking it anyway especially if your not the original owner and/or if you do low klms as they wear with age..............Cheers Steve

The burning oil smell is likely the valve guide seals letting a litle bit through, not serious and a known thing with this engine

Mine does so too and has leaking rocker covers... it drips onto the hot exhaust that runs under the gearbox. Yet I don't notice any unusually high oil consumption, so it's more of a weeping than a leak. (at the moment)

I got pinged on the leaking rockers for rwc when I brought mine the fumy smell was the oil leaking on the exhaust after I changed the gaskets and stopped the leak the oil burning smell went away I mostly noticed it when I was driving at low speed with the window down ie costing around the paddock.
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.
