  • Which Roof Rack - RhinoRack / Tracklander / ARB?

I have a new Prado GX 5 seater, and I'm looking at roof racks.

I like the look of the RhinoRack Pioneer, but how does it stack up against the Tracklander & ARB?
I will be using it for carrying camping gear etc for 4WD trips, although not of the very extreme type.
    Any info would be appreciated.

I have been looking for a long time and I have not been able to come up with the right answer for a roof rack. ARB is the best but is designed to stay on and I want to take it off for the day to day running around when I don’t need it. RhinoRack, I like steal and with the added bars to hold it on I think it sits two high. Tigerz don’t do one for the 120 or 150. I was looking at the Rola Large Vortex Luggage Tray http://www.rola.com.au/cargo-carrying.aspx but I could not find anyone who stocks them (who was local enough for me to get to).

    Still looking.

The Rhino Pioneer Platform is a low profile rack where you remove the existing factory rails to mount the platform on. The Tracklander and ARB version (especially the steel) is heavy and impinges on the load carrying capacity of the roof.

The rhino Pioneer platform has planks that run north-south. This I think creates less noise than the others who have bars/planks running east-west. Mesh also creates noise.

Another one to look at is the Windcheetah if you are looking at platforms.
Ebay also has a similar looking ARB rack at a much lower price. Seller is Powerful 4x4.

I don't think you need steel for roof racks. For a bullbar, then yes.

May I suggest that you check out Tradesmen Oval roof racks (from Melbourne) they make steel & alloy. I had a steel one on my 120 Prado for 4 years & when I sold the Prado the rack went with it. It was an excellent rack no regrets with it at all. Easy to remove & replace, (6 bolts) you just need 3 people minimum to guide the rack back onto the posts so it didn't drop onto the roof.

I am getting another steel Tradesman roof rack (same as my previous one) fitted on my 150 tomorrow. The steel one is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the alloy one and only weighs 34 kilos compared to the 26 - 28? kilos of the alloy.
Other steel racks are 50 kilos which is too heavy. For me anyway. Opposite lock can order them in.

          Hey Fergy4WD,

I would suggest you shop around on the net & speak to as many rack owners as possible, whichever way you go they cost a tidy sum & after all it's you're choice.
I had a Toyota rack (Rhino) but am replacing it. Because it did not meet my requirements, Where as the Tradesman has, for more than 4 years.

          Cheers

Have a look at the whisbars as well http://www.whispbar.com.au/roofracks/whispbar They reckon they are silent and more fuel effiicient. Same load capacities as others and can use others accessories.

I like the ARB tradesman racks that are open at the front and back. Very low height and wind resistance so they can stay on with little effect.

Looks good but the price listed on that page was a bit on the high side.

I have a rhino basket sitting on heavy duty rhino racks, after my 60 Ml lift I am at about 2.2 Metres high so impossible to get into 95% of car parks. I will however be pulling off the basket when I return from a Flinders / Simmo trip in August. I also bought a rhino roof bag.....I can fit a heap of stuff in so really happy with that as well. By the way the stock rails have been removed.

Just fitted a Rhino Pioneer tray on feet, impressed with the design, easy to fit, lightweight 2 person job. Do get some wind noise but get use to, not sure about affect on fuel economy but strength is there, versaltility and flexibility to add extras, plenty of anchor points without add ons, plus general asthetics sold me on choice. Looking around for bargain, best i could get was 10% off, picked up for $969. Should keep the missus out of Westfields!

I had the windcheeter fitted. It's been great. Fits in under the garage door nicely and is lightweight so can take a heavier load. There is no appreciable wind noise. I had ideas of taking it off when not needed but don't think that's necessary now.

brucetheshark1 could you post some photos of the windcheeter to show how it attaches to the vehicle, does it attach to factory rails or to feet. I currently have Rhino HD racks with Rhino alloy tray but need something smaller to get it into the garage. I was looking at cutting the tray down.

Just a question on roof racks. I've been hunting around and I'm unsure of which way to go in regards to mounting system. I'd like to utilise the standard factory roof rails but have been told that this will decrease load carrying capabilities of my chosen roof rack. I've been looking closely at the Tracklander roof rack and am pretty impressed with the look and setup. They only decision I need o make is whether to go roof mount or rail mount. I have an oztent RV5 so either need an open end on the rack or a full length rack to accomodate the tent. I don't intend on leaving the rack on when not needed so am leaning towards the rail mounted type rack, but have been told that it's not too much more trouble to remove the factory roof rails and mount the roof rack on the factory mounting points. My other concern is whether there are any rubber seals that may perish prematurely from fitting the rack and removing it constantly? Looking forward to hearing your feedback guys on what you've chosen and whether it was for the convenience of utilising the standard roof rails, whether you've removed them to mount the roof rack or whether you remove the rails to mount the rack and put them back on the car after removing the rack. Cheers guys.
