That's the problem There is not even 1 part of a car that is 'non-wearable'. Can you think of one?? I would definitely be reading the extended warranty docs front to back to see EXACTLY what it excludes. I am always hesitant of extended warranty because I always fear that when i need to use it, they will turn around with the old 'wear and tear' argument. As I said, everything on a car wears out.....

      Clutch life expectancy

Hi chaps I have early release D4D 06/7 at recent 130K service was told the same thing, clutch is on the way out. There is no change in pedal feel from new, always been a bit heavy but hey, this ain't a light drive train. It has always been a bit shuddery at random times if you don't take care, and gears 1 + 2 can be sticky - but if you look at all the gearbox threads the 6 spd manual does that. Doesn't bother me.

My life experiences with clutch danger signals over many makes are all the same. If it starts to slip under load, gone. If it has uncontrollable shudder, gone. If the engagement position moves up from the original, gone. If you burn the hell out of it to the point of the well known stink, may be gone down the track.

I have none of that and I drive like Dame Edna Everidge would so I expect much more than 130K. For EG I still have 40% on my original brake pads, so in general Toyota brand parts are good (except the shockers) and I will ignore the service advice!!

        HI Fisher,

I wonder how many of us can remember when most people wouldn't touch a car that had 'been round the clock' back in the days when they were mph and five digits. (100,000 miles or 160,000k's)

Things wear. Thats why we have mechanics.

Hi Tas, know what you mean BUT things have improved since I used to get less that 20K out of my VW Kombi(1950's) engines, or got about 12K out of front disc pads on the old BJ75 Cruiser..

The Prado has done about 45,000km since the service where I was told it needed a new clutch, and the clutch still feels perfectly fine to me. It has been serviced several times by two other service shops, and nobody has mentioned any issue with the clutch. You can draw your own conclusions.

...and re the extended warranty mentioned above. It has now expired, but I did make one small successful claim on it - a leaking oil seal on the transfer case. I was quite surprised that it was covered, but it was all done without question and with great efficiency! I think the job would have cost about $400, a lot less than I paid for the warranty, but at least something. Would I take an extended warranty again? Don't really know, but I wouldn't reject the idea completely.

aside from all the usual variables
I service 2x Kzj120 2003 gxl's one clutch was done at 233,000klms the other is still going good (a little stiff) at 245,000klms
also i have d4d hiluxes done well over 200,000klms on the original clutch!
                This is road use!
low range use and offroad will decrease its life somewhat, im sure bogholes and grit will really cut its life down as it deos with brakes
and of corse your handbrake shoes!
other than removing and measuring the thickness of the plate, you can load it up in top gear and c how much pressure it takes to slip the clutch, this will give you an idea...... like if you wanted to have it checked before the simpson trip lol........
if it takes quite a bit your ok, if it slips easy, best get it replaced, generally it will take an expert with experience to be able to tell.

Transfer case seal is a common and easily fixed issue. Seal is about $14.00 and job is 1hr labour. All up less than $120.00

Any one got advice on what a clutch replacement will set me back? Mine does need replacing (1kz) but i'm dreading the bill. Suffice to say, I don't use Toyota servicing and am not bound to them.

iantz mine was $287 for a excedy clutch kit, got it threw a mate that works in spare parts. They retail $450-500 then $50-80 to machine the flywheel. Its a easy job i did it in a weekend, although the box is bloody heavy!

Jimmy - what's the exedy like? Happy with it?

Ive changed clutches on smaller cars in my teens (gemini, escort etc). Considered leaving this to the professionals. Although, if its not that hard....... Did you follow a manual/guide or anything?

I have 92,000kms on my Petrol 07 GXL and its fine so far.

On a side note the family 60 Series Cruiser has its original clutch and has done 383,000kms and counting. It's had a hard life with my mums driving and towing a 2000kg van for at least 40,000kms.

I wonder if the prado will last as well...

Old thread but have a question related.
The clutch in my 120 prado diesel 6 speed has been really stiff since getting the car, it is a exedy heavy duty clutch that the previous owner had put in about 3 years ago. Ive had the car since Jan and its probably gotten a little worse.

Problem - the clutch feels really heavy and sometimes does feel like it stutters a bit when releasing, also there is very little movement in the clutch which is how its been since getting the car. To engage the clutch the pedal has to be all the way down near the floor. Sometimes getting it into the low gears with the pedal in still takes a bit of effort and doesn't feel right.

It doesn't feel as if its slipping at all though, is this most likely that the clutch needs replacing though? Had replaced the slave cylinder and made no change. After doing this clamped the hose and the pedal went stiff, from what i was told this means the master cylinder is ok. Have booked it in to get the clutch done next week but has me thinking about if Ive made the right choice or if it could be something else. Or if this is "normal" as the car has over 330,000 on it.

                              thanks Mike

have a look in the search, I think there were some issues about wear on the input shaft housing where the release bearing goes on which causes pedal issues.
