  • Factory rear view screen to use two cameras

    Hi
Just checked out the thread on activating the factory camera with a on off switch but does anyone know if a second camera can be added for the back of a caravan to the factory screen.

I have had my factory GXL screen removed and now have a Clarion Sat Nav system in it's place. the factory reversing camera is run on 6 volts (don't know why), however, the installer changed it to 12 volts so that it can run through the Clarion unit. He also installed a toggle switch so that I can look at what is behind my van whilst driving along. Have been told that this is illegal to do in Victoria.

    Yowie.

Yes, you can add another camera to the factory screen. The OEM wiring is simply a composite video feed and could be run through a switcher or relay to get the desired result with a small switch on your dash somewhere to flick between the two cameras. Your local car stereo shop should be able to do this for you.

Hi, I have spent a few hours trying to find out the wire colours for the rear camera. So far I have not found the exact wire colours for the signal or the shield that connect to the display. If any one can help it would much appreciated.

            Front / rear camera install

After stumbling across some threads in regards to being able to switch the rear camera on with a simple switch I decided to give it a go.

Someone posted a link to a nice factory looking front camera so I bought one with the idea of being able to switch between front and rear cameras using the factory screen. This is the ebay item if anyone is interested. 151126413365

It took an afternoon and most of the night but I'm really happy with the result. The camera has better resolution and low light performance than the rear camera. Might have to swap out the factory rear camera for one of these.

Most time consuming part of the project was deciding on how to perform the switching. Two switches, 3 positions switches, relays, toggles. Anyway, I decided on a 3 position switch and a couple of relays to do the switching.

            There are two functions requires.

            1. Disconnecting the reverse signal and supplying 12v to fool the screen into displaying the video signal. This can be done with a SPDT switch

            2. Choosing which video signal is sent to the screen. Front or Back. Can also be done with a SPDT switch

I decided that I only wanted to have one switch to perform these functions so I have a 3 position switch that sends power to the relevant relays as required. Centre position puts everything back to normal factory function.

Front camera install was easy and only required drilling of one hole to pass the wire through and to bolt it in. Fits well and looks like it came from the factory.

I bought the switches and from Jaycar. I settled on a 3 position illuminated toggle. Green for front and red for rear camera. It is a SPDT. It has a nice finish and action. Also bought a couple of 5 pin relays so I could have normally open and closed positions.

I installed the switch in the empty slot next to the Low range selection knob.

If you follow the wires from the plug at the back of the screen, you will find there are 4 wires coming out of one larger black cable. These are the camera wires. There is a purple (sheild) red (video signal) black and white.

Using my ebay camera, I just connected the yellow wire to the red video signal and it worked.

The screen is NTSC so you will need a camera which outputs the same format.

I tow a caravan and was wondering if this could be used at the rear of the van.

I guess my concern is the distance and therefore voltage reduction and anything else anyone can suggest as a problem.
