  • Heater core

There is only 1 post in regard to heater core and its for a 120 and there isn't anything helpful other than your really unlucky.

Firstly yesterday i noticed a smell of coolant inside the car, got home and checked water level and water pump. Water pump was clean but the coolant reservoir had to emptied.

So i filled it up and started nail biting in case it was the head.

Then this morning there was a cool steam coming through the vents with the rich coolant smell. Kept an eye on the temp gauge and got to work, checked the reservoir and it had emptied.

Just goggled the symptoms and it came back a positive match.

So i did what it suggested and checked to see if it was damp in the passenger foot well and it was.

i read that you can by-pass it with a new hose but you remove the ability to heat the car. as a short term fix this is ok but no point in living with it.

    Has anyone done this?
So how do you replace the heater core?
And is it better to leave it to a professional?

Leave it for a pro to do, cause if the coolant comes out and goes over all of your carpet, then they have to clean it all up, just make sure when you get it done that your carpet is nice and clean. Less worry for you too.

      thanks croozza,
Is it going to be bloody expensive?
i hear its a time consuming job and i imagine the heater core wont be cheap.
      prob $500-$600?

Well i popped down to the mechanic and asked him about cost, he said the last car they did was a focus and took 14 hours,
the part is $400-$500 and the labor would be a grand at least.
think i might just by-pass it for now (nice and easy job, fingers crossed) and by a decent jumper.
might see about attempting it myself next holidays or something.

I'm not surprised a small European Hatchback took 14 hours to change the Heater core. But the 90 series dash is walk in the park to take apart. Get your self a workshop manual and reassess the possibility of doing it yourself. Gregory's/Haynes are both good. I hear Max Ellery is not too bad either.

yep, once the glove box is out (two small phillips screws) there is really nothing behind the dash, except for Passenger Airbag, but I think you dont have that, have a look for yourself and access the situation, even tell your mechanic that there is nothing behind the dash.

So i got myself a Gregory's manual today. had a good look at how to remove the heater core. sounds straight forward but time consuming.
So then the problem was getting the heater core for a reasonable price. was looking around everywhere and then i decided to just search for Prado Heater,
then i got sent to this listing on ebay:
                http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....:X:RTQ:AU:1123
And this one is only $138.90
i found another mob on ebay and they said $340,
i know the old rule of you get what you pay for. and its such a (trying not to swear) hard job to get it in and out but the $200 i will save is worth the risk.
I will prob buy the item now but install it when i have a full weekend to do it (prob only take a few hours, but just in case)
and will document how i go.
just wanted to say thanks again guys

Hi mathewmeldrum, How did you go with this problem? I have exactly the same thing happening at the moment, Filling up resevoir and it is draining real fast and have wet under passenger side carpet. Is it true that you just undo the ingoing and outgoing from the firewall and join them together, and only lose heat function? I took my glove box and centre console out and still couldnt find where the heater core was. =(. Hopefully you had more luck than what I am.

                  cheers Mass

                    Hi All,
So we've just bought the wife a 97' VX Grande, super happy with it, but have quickly realised the heater is not working (at best luke warm air coming out of vents).
With young kids and living in Rural Victoria, the mornings are freezing, so am about to get a 12v heater just to keep them warm in the mornings.

After much research, i've done the following to try and rectify the issue:
                    - Flushed the coolant and replaced, also made sure to bleed any air that may be trapped out of the system.
                    - Flushed the heater core (clear water and nice flow coming through).
                    - Checked the Heater Control valve is functioning correctly (No issues there)
                    - Checked both the inlet and outlet hoses going to the heater core, both are the same temp (almost too hot to hold on to)

So having no issues with the above, i've narrowed it down to either a heater core issue, but more than likely the blend door?
Has anyone had this issue? How did you fix it? Where do i even start to check the heater core and/or blend door?

                    Cheers

Radiator stop leak or "Permanent" head gasket repair in a bottle may have been used previously and possibly clogged your heater core reducing the amount of coolant that passes through or coating and insulating the lining perimeters of the fins? I've heard the permanent head gasket stop leaks can pretty much knock out your heater core instantly after use reducing it to giving off Luke warm air at best.

If the heater didn't work properly when you bought it then I don't think it should've passed a road worthy. Did the previous owner produce a current road worthy certificate as part of the sale?

I found my heater not working last winter. I have duel fuel so the heater hoses run to the lpg as well via a "T" piece. I disconected the coolant hoses at the heater core and gently flushed with a hose, no result tried flushing the other way and had a slight flow which increased to full flow with a heap of rusty looking clap coming out. flushed in reverse and a small bit of clap came out, reversed again flushed until water came out clear both ways. Dont connect the hose to the inlet/outlet as pressure could easily rupture the heater core. Coolant concentration has been checked and maintained while I have had the car, so I can only suspect the previous owner had some period when coolant wasn't the right concentration. Ken.
