  • Brake vacuum pump overhaul

My 2003 KZ-TE diesel 120 has now done 205000ks and Toyo recommend replacing the blades in the vacuum pump, the power booster still works fine. Has anyone bothered to have the blades replaced or have done the work themselves?

    Cheers,
    Foxo

    Hi Foxo,
I have heard of these pumps failing,(no vacuum assist for brakes) & then can be fairly costly to repair/replace.
Might be good idea to follow recommendation as most cant be repaired aftermarket,
    Cheers

Hi Fellas. My 1KZ-TE is now over 220,000 and no worries. Old 1KZ van over 300,000 no worries. Cost of removing pump and servicing probably not alot greater than fitting new pump. You could get another 200,000 without touching it. If you are fussy with oil and filter changes and the current pump aint broke - why fix it. What is the worse thing that could happen - heavy brake pedal. These things dont just die, they get progressively worse. You will notice it happening. My .02c worth. Cheers.

        Vacuum Pump question

Hi Prado owners, I have 2007 120 d4d. is the vacuum pump the filter looking thing that is next to the brake master cylinder. Mine seems to cycle on and off every 3 -5 seconds. Is this normal. I have just noticed that i can hear it inside when we are driving. Prado has done 130,000k. It sometimes sounds like some thing is sucking in something under the dash. like it low on fluid. Fluid level is perfect. Thanks in advance if anyone can help. I am heading off on a 600k round trip to Nungarin and back tomorrow and I will have to risk it.

            Hi Russ,

After I posted the initial question in July 2011, I decided to leave the vacuum pump alone and wait for an obvious degradation in power brake assistance. My 2003 GXL has now done 237000 and the brakes are still fine.

            Cheers,
            Foxo

              Thank Foxo,
Mine has just clocked past 200 000 KM and hasn't missed a beat other than a few parts that wore out.
I'm having to replace the handbrake shoes due to excessive wear . . and I have ran out of adjustment.
Since new ,I have only replaced one set of rotors on the front and changed the pads over a few times.Great brakes
I might follow your theory as the blades in the vacuum pump are probably still in mint condition.

Mine was done as a part of the standard 200k service ... Parts (blades and packing) $170 ... probably would have done another 200k

hoping to expand a little on this thread, not hijack.

my 05 VX is the first car I've owned with electric vacuum pump brake system.

Derb in a post up higher mentioned fluid and filter changes. Good fluid regularly changed is a no brainer. I'm not aware of what filter I should be doing on the brake system? anyone able to post a pic or a diagram or explanation?

BennetA - I'm amazed there's something particular to a 200k service schedule, I thought most schedules ran out and into generic servicing after 150k

                    cheers
