  • Towing - gotta LOVE that diesel

Took the camper trailer and tribe up to Bay of Fires in Tassie on the weekend.

Fully loaded the CT probably weighs around the 900kg mark.

The Prado was full of fuel, six bodies, the Waeco fridge and drinks and chips and ipods and laptops and toy bears and dolls and six 300x300 boards for #1 son to practice breaking for his black belt and 40litres of drinking water and backpacks and etc etc....

Anyways, we average 12.5 litres per hundred k's (averaged over 22000 ks so pretty accurate) with mostly 60 and 80k roads as we live rural.

    With the CT hooked up, sitting with the traffic we returned;

    13.15 LPHK.................

Thats .65 of a litre more to tow the CT...

Gotta love that diesel...and shes the old 1kz!

Do you use regular diesel or some kind of premium diesel (bp ultimate, caltex vortex etc.)?

I love the fuel economy of the diesel, however I have found that the BP ultimate provides about 20% better economy than regular diesel. definitely worth the few cents a litre extra.

Did you bury the bodies or just chuck them over the side?

You Tassy guys get better economy because you're closer to the south pole: less friction down there near the axis point of rotation. I'm sure of it.

I think it may all be the same down here. I have used caltex, BP and woollies and found no difference sadly.

I think nice cool dense air could play a part maybe?

I've tried them too, and same resultn no noticable difference on the 1kz. I dare say the D4D may get the advantage of the better fuel, but it doesn't seem to effect the old oiler!!! That said I run Vortex nearly all the time now as my local woolies / Caltex has it, can't be a bad thing!!!

I agree the diesel is great for towing. On my trips so far towing a 1.5t camper (fully loaded with water etc, I don't usually carry bodies though) I have always got around 13l/100 and I find that its got plenty of go.

Wow. My personal best is 13.5L/100KM, I think it was pretty much all hwy driving. Avg 17.5L/100KM in stop-start traffic. PP member croozza says (and who am I to doubt him) that he gets 13.something in town from his 3.4 V6... Magic fuel?

20% better? Is that a typo or is it really 20% better? If so that's a massive difference and it simply doesn't sound right. Could it maybe be that you did different driving in the 2 different tanks? I'm going to try the BP diesel for the first time in my next fill up.

yeah it was a huge difference in consumption. I'm down below 10l/100km now (just), and that's including city driving, with the regular diesel I was at 12l/100km
that first tank was from the sticks, so it may have been a bit dirty but still.
driving conditions are usually the same for me as when I drive this route, I rarely see another car. temperature/weather was pretty constant for those two drives.
