  • Where to camp on the Blackwood River in WA

    Hi all.

I'm trying to find some good areas to camp along the Blackwood river in the South of WA but so far have only come across the Alexandra Bridge campsite. I didn't want a caravan type experience - more a chance to camp amongst the bushes . Thought I'd throw the question out there in case anybody here had some real gems to impart. Surely there has to be more places to camp along the Blackwood than just Alexandra Bridge?

Try Wrights Bridge on the Nannup-Balingup Rd,its a designated campsite and a bush drive from there to Alexandra would be a nice quiet day.Apart from that I only know of the caravan parks at Boyup Brook,Bridgetown and Nannup, not what you were after I know but nice enough spots right on the river anyway. Unfotunately a lot of the Blackwood runs through private property between Boyup and Bridgetown, the further south?... towards the coast.... you go you should be able to find a quiet spot or two if you look around. Not too sure what some of the local authorities think of people just parking up wherever. In the height of summer they might get a bit toey.Gotta find ya first I spose.Cheers Grizz.

Sues Bridge is the other main crossing of the Blackwood. It has all the camping services you may want, including firewood, long drops, BBQs etc. Its bitumen all the way, turn down Sues Rd just out of Busso.

You may want to consider the campsite at Great North Crossing. Its on Gt North Road, and you can come in from Mowen Rd, Dennys Rd off Sues Rd, or from Brockman Hwy end which you would need to go over the crossing. Has firewood, long drops etc.

Warner Glen is a bit like Alex Bridge. Nice, but lots of caravans etc

Another nearby campsite is Chapman pool, but its on the Chapman River which flows into the Blackwood near Warner Glen.

There are lots of other campsites along the Blackwood if you want to explore. When you heading down? It will be a bit muddy at the moment.

        Thanks Grizzly & Daz.

It's not a part of the world I'm all that familiar with at all. Like most, I've passed through Margaret River etc but that's about it.

At the moment we're looking at about the middle of next month (October) before we head down there. Our mates want to try some canoeing on the river and I have a collection of RC boats I wouldn't mind giving a blast. It might be possible for us to go mid-week to avoid any weekend crowds but that is a work in progress with all our workplaces. Might just be for a weekend but I'm hoping to go for a few extra days than that.

I think as long as we could get the canoes out and camp a little away from from too much civilization it'd fit the bill for us. Though - our mates aren't campers at all and the presence of showers has been talked about. However I have a HWOD and I might be able to persuade them further afield with that.....

I think what I might do is do a quick run down to that neck of the woods and take a look around in the next week or 2.

Beauty information guys! I really appreciate it! Thanks for the local knowledge!

If canoeing, an easy & popular trip is from Sues bridge to Great North. That time of year the water will still be flowing nicely, so not too much paddling work.
You can launch at Sues, drop a car at Gt North crossing, which is via Dennys Rd.
Alternatively, a similar distance from Gt North to Warner Glen, but the river widens and slows down a bit.
These are all easy paddles, and great for kids too if considering

The water will be quite cool that time of year, and the HWOD would be nice after a day out on the river. I must get one.

            Thanks Daz.

Looks like the Sues Road campsite will be the go. Although we'll be heading down there in the second week of the school holidays so I'm really not sure if we'll get a spot. From what I read - seems like it can get busy during school holiday periods.

Can't find any reference to the campsite on the Great North Road. Found a snippet somewhere that said camping is no longer allowed at a place called Hutt Pool, which is where the road crosses the river. There's picnic stuff there but no no camping allowed - apparently.

Might keep some of the others in mind if we can't get a spot.
