  • What spares to take!

I have a 2007 Prado Grande Petrol Auto with no special mods i.e. standard suspension, Dunlop AT20 tyres etc.

I have been off-roading in moderation for past 20 years and the only serious breakdown was a failed EFI fuse on a 80 Series which even the RAC remote out-call man couldn't solve so towed to nearest dealer! And a punctures which i fixed myself without issue.

As I am planning a number of more remote trips over the next few years (Kimberley, top-end, Cape York, Simpson) towing an Ulitimate camper (wheel and tyres matched to the Prado).

I would appreciate the forum's opinions on what kit-bag of spares to take. And any special tools? If this has been discussed before, I couldn't find the link so please share!

Also, the options for workshop manuals seems somewhat limited - what was the outcome of the vote on Ellery vs. Gregory vs. Haynes manuals?

I have a 2007 GXL V6 petrol, and have just done Cape York (Kimberleys next year), and I really only took the basics:

In my opinion, this list is in order of importance:

    Tie-down straps (nylon)
    Strap-ties - 40cm or longer ones
    Duct Tape
Fusing tape - for hose repairs
    fencing wire
    pliers
    screwdrivers
    1/2" socket set
    spanner set
    Puncture Repair Kit
    Assorted nuts and bolts
    Spare jubilee clips
    Spare air filter
    Spare fuel filter
    Spare fan belt
    Spare fuses
    length of fuel hose
    Engine Oil
    Transmission Oil
    Brake Fluid
metal glue (for radiator / fuel tank)
    Butane Soldering Iron
    superglue
    silicon sealant
    hacksaw
    sandpaper
    WD40

That's about it. These cars are pretty indestructible.

    As AJ120 has said:

    1. if it moves and it shouldn't, use Duct tape or strap ties.
    2. if it doesn't move and it should, use WD40.

Note that I have not included spare radiator hoses. I have never had one split.

Also, make sure everything is in good condition before travelling.

    Cheers,

    Rob.

Add small squirt bottle of liquid WD40, not the spray (???). Just incase something doesn't move that should! Duct tape and fencing wire should cover the moves but shouldn't. To be honest, it would be hard to determine what to but on the list - fuses are definitely a must.

What are your planned trips going to include as far as tracks are conserned?

More water crossings, maybe the sealant and fuses would be more important? More of the rough stuff, maybe a spare springs and a shocker? this could really end up an over-done non-event...

Definitely add an extra case of burbon and coke (or drink of taste), should the required spare not be in the tool chest - these may come in handy!

the list above is very good however one needs to decide how much room you have for this sort of stuff (I don't have a trailer so it would take up 1/2 the boot in my case).

First up, I am no expert. The following is based on experience doing the Canning, Simpson and Cape York. I wouldn't do any of the above trips with stock suspension. Stock shocks will likely overheat when you reach the corrugations. If you run stock shocks, you will need to stop regularly when on the corries to let the shocks cool down. Loaded up you will also need to upgrade your springs. Depending on the age of your vehicle, I would take spare hoses. The above list is really good. Our trip leader has always specified spare coil springs and shocks, however after taking them on all trips, I won't be taking them next time. however I will be taking spare shocker rubbers and washers as a shock rubber pounded out on the Cape trip and the top nut pulled right through the chassis leaving the shocker waving in the breeze. So inspect your suspension regularly and don't ignore a flattened shock rubber like I did. Lastly, install a thick CB antenna as the standard ones break due to the soft body mounts to the chassis. Oh, and have fun

You'd be surprised how little room that all takes. The most bulky item is the air filter. It all fits into a moderate-sized soft tool bag plus an airtight lunch container (for the oils and glue)

I pretty take the same as Rob's list but don't forget the second spare tyre.
Notwithstanding the following are my three golden rules,
                      1) Prepare well before leaving home and replace anything you're not 100% confident with.
                      2) Don't push too hard along the track.
                      3) Don't overload the wagon.
Follow these rules and you are more likely to bring home the spares box unopened.

                      cheers

Can i ask how much oil and transmission fluid people take i only take a 1 litre bottle of transmission fluid and oil. Why would you take the full 7 litres of oil the thing needs i suppose i am thinking if i need 7 letres of oil on the track something has seriously gone wrong and i am probably looking at a tow anyway for 25,000 half way around oz i took pretty much most of the above but i included spare radiator hoses, heater hose, fan belts and clips for hoses., Oh and a good air compressor and tyre repair kit
On the whole trip i used 1 screw driver and 6 cable ties (the cable tie fix to a side mount that stops the front fuel tank bash plate is still in place ) but as said above about $1500ollars worth of pre trip work was done on the car before i left including
                        Oil and filter change
                        Air cleaner change
                        Fuel filter change
                        Transfer and gearbox fluid change
                        Diff oil change
                        Radiator fluid change
oil joints had the crap greased out of them
1 exhaust mount replaced looked dodgy
Shocks inspected ( i have iron man 2 inch lift)
Low voltage cut out put in aux battery
Every bolt that we could see checked

As above my mantra is i would rather spend the money on prep at home than have to spend tripple at some dodgy road house repairer and have to camp there for 4 weeks awaiting parts
"Drive down that track really fast, if something gets in your way turn"
