  • Prado 90 3.4 manual engine noise

    Hi guys,

I have a very annoying engine noise and vibration at certain revs range. It always happen between 2800 and 3000 RPM. I have replaced middle muffler - the one with the pressure valve for a standard one but it didn't improve the noise and vibrations.

Did anybody come across this issue? Is there any solution for it?

Is this something that started recently or has always been the case?

It could be the characteristic exhaust harmonics that kick in at about that 2500 - 3000 rpm mark. If so, the only fix it to replace the headers with extractors.

Yep, as I've mentioned before, my 90 series manual V6 had this vibration from the day I drove it out of the new car showroom, until the day I sold it...8 years later.

Extremely annoying, and not something I've experienced on any modern vehicle before or since.

Particularly annoying in the manual, as that rev range corresponds to 110km/h in 5th.

Or get an auto, at 100kph it only revs at 2250rpm

Mine cruises at around 1,900 at the moment - as long as there's no incline!
            (Not for long though.)

Ahh good old 33's, got to love em for that, but not for the extra in fuel you use with standard diff gears.

Thanks for your tip. I'm doing clutch next week and i will definitely consider changing headers. I guess first i will have to have a close look on flywheel balance since the vibrations are passed through the drive shafts. I have checked it today while car was lifted up on hoist. These vibrations intensify when engine goes around 2800 RPM. I clearly felt it when was touching the rear drive shaft.

                Cheers

Are the ballancing weights still on the tail shafts, if not thats where your vibration comes from.

                    Croozza,

If it was the tail shafts, it would be at a certain speed that the vibration sets in and not at a certain rpm.

Yes I know that is the normal case, but Lesz mentioned that it is coming from the drive shaft, It could all be coincidence that it is around the magical induction noise at 2800rpm.

I just got my car back from garage after changing the clutch. Much, much better now, however certain noise and some vibes are still there. I guess those vibes are characteristic to this particular engine harmonics and there's not much you can do about it. The summary is that both steps - changing middle muffler and replacing worn out clutch helped. Maybe changing headers would improve it even more but i'm happy now so let's get Cruising and then off the road into the wilderness :-)

                        Cheers guys
