  • Getting to the GTG from SEQ

    Talk about advanced planning...

With so many ways to arrive at the Flinders from here, what to do, what to do?

To get started, I've been playing around with some tools that may help with sharing. I've given up on Google Maps as it didn't route across minor tracks and desert lines. Instead, I've given Bing Maps a go and my early experimentation is promising.

For archival, I've kept the original plans...

    1. Birdsville - Simpson Desert - Oodnadatta - Lake Eyre - Flinders Ranges - Innamincka
    2. Nindigully - Cunumulla - Eulo - Currawinya - Hungerford - Bourke - Wilcannia - Broken Hill - Flinders Ranges (From Richo's post)
    3. Darling River - Lightning Ridge - Nindigully - Currawinya National Park (from Bobsled)
    4. Nindigully or St George (1) - Thargomindah or Noccundra (2) - Innamincka & Coongie Lakes (3 & 4) - Arkaroola Village [via Bore Track & Cameron Corner] (5 & 6) - Bendleby Ranges [start of GTG]

Here is the plan (as at 8-Sep). If there are changes, I will keep updating them in this post:

21-Sep: Starting point - Bollon (LiveFreeAndRoam meets with A10) (Convoy of 2)
22-Sep: Bollon - Noccundra (Nockatunga) (Party meets with Dobbo, Andrew and JeffH) (Convoy of 5)
23-Sep: Noccundra (Nockatunga) - Dig Tree - Innamincka
24-Sep: Explore Around Innamincka/Rest Day (Party meets with Stewy, BobSled, REV) (Convoy of 8)
25-Sep: Innamincka - Epsilon - Cameron Corner (Party meets with Quicky) (Convoy of 9)
26-Sep: Cameron Corner - Montecollina Bore - Arkaroola Village (Party meets with TBD) (Convoy of ?)
27-Sep: Arkaroola Village (spend the day doing the low-range 4WD loop or rest day)
28-Sep: Arkaroola Village - Hawker (last fuel stop) - Bendleby Ranges (Party meets up with GTG) (Convoy of 40!!!)
29-Sep: Official Start of SA GTG

I've been through all the posts (phew) and please correct me if I have missed someone.

    Hey Matt

Does this mean that we need to have a recce (secret password for weekend away 4being) for each proposal to discuss the options?

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Great to see this thread started for the SEQ gang. Don't share your optimism with Bing though LFaR. I tried to make it take me home from Alice Springs via Tobermorey on the Plenty/Donohue Highways and it couldn't do it. When Richo and Stewy swing over to this thread with their scenic route ideas we may be in business. Until we have a GTG night one camp spot it's all guesswork. My thoughts are to include the Darling River run, Lightning Ridge, Nindigully pub and possibly Currawinya either going or returning. Hope you other guys put up some other ideas soon. I'm planning the rest of my big lap going clockwise from home around to Port Augusta in Feb/March next year. From Port Augusta I was thinking of heading up to the Lambert Centre and Chambers Pillar etc before heading home east from Alice Springs. So depending on how soon we go firm on a route I may have to change mine. I await your ideas!

Only just found this thread. Jeez,......talk about advance planning?
I for one wouldn't mind visiting the corners of our state.
Have a quick game of cricket.
Could visit Camerons or Popels corner......then again it might be easier just to go and sit in one. LOL.

          Let the planning begin.

Apparently according to Renee your always in the naughty corner anyway. I see that you have changed your avatar, as a former Big Kahuna of the 4WDring First party that avatar was not appropriate

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

              Richo,

I felt the Avatar needed a change, a new pic was well overdue.
I wasn't aware that my last Avatar needed to be Sanctioned ?????

Without the destination set for 2012GTG, I suppose a route down to SA maybe a little difficult to plan at this stage unless we had some inside information.......hint, hint.
I would like though to see part of the Simpson as I didn't do the crossing with the rest of the group on the 2009GTG.
Depending on numbers etc for next year, an option maybe to hook up with others or some of the NSW crew.

              Cheers

While not knowing the number that you estimated, I would say that raising the number is a given.

Hopefully you will be able to accommodate lots of Prado's.
