    First thing to do: Replace the filter between the two tanks. It's up under the car.

      Hi photoprado.
      ok will try that this weekend, but i cant see how that would be a problem as its fine until its down to 30 litres, surely a blocked filter will just impeded the pump to draw from the aux to the main. If it were blocked it would be a problem for the whole aux-main tank flow wouldnt it ?

        Maybe. But best to resolve the easy fixes and move on to the more difficult ones if the simple solutions don't solve the problem.

          Having just been stuck on the side of the Mitchell Falls Rd in the Kimberley with the same symptoms you have I'd highly recommend changing the transfer filter first. They are around $100 and easy to change (there are threads on PradoPoint telling you how - I'd highly recommend hopping under the car first with a high pressure hose to clean the dirt/mud off the filter before attempting it as otherwise it drops into your eyes).

          Most of your 20l that you added probably went into the aux tank (assuming it came from a jerry can).

          If changing the filter doesn't work there are a few other threads with other problems people had. But try the simple fix first!

          PS when you change the filter keep the rubber caps and put them on the old one - that way you can keep it as a spare if the problem is something else.

            Hi All
            So I still havent done anything to car but some new symptoms emerged.
            1. 75+ litres fuel in the sub tank. car stalled (fuel starvation on a hill). managed to restart it after a bit of cranking.
            2. about 800 metres later car stalled again. tried to refill with some fuel (maybe a stuck fuel guage). cant undo the filler cap due to suction. eventually managed but could only get 10-15 litres in before it started spilling on the road. How can this be if the main tank is empty. !!!!
            drove home ok.
            Cant be the filter !
            but maybe some kind of breather pipe is blocked.
            Anyone with intimate knowledge of this system, i would be very grateful for some "theory of operation" tutorials on this

              Plenty of fuel system threads here.

              The first step is to remove the filter between the tanks and even if you don't want to replace it, check it! Take it off and check it. The filter can be the issue, but there can also be other issues that will be more difficult.

                Suction issue exactly the problem I had with my old BJ40 landcruiser many years ago. Tank breather was blocked so as fuel was used by the motor it would create a vacuum in the tank. Once vacuum overcame the pump suction it would stall due to fuel starvation. Not sure how the breather system in the Prado works but well worth finding out.
                1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
                2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

                  Suction is wrong. If you have suction that's holding a cap on, your cap breather is buggered.. Meaning the pumps wont be able to get fuel out of the tanks either.

                  Try to reproduce the issue and then remove the cap, see if issue clears. Could be as simple as a new cap.

                      Hi All
                      Not the fuel cap
                      but i replaced the filter that lives above the tailshaft between the tanks with a Z780 from ryco ($40) and so far so good, the fuel lock has disapeared and now i am able to get fuel in to the front tank ! . need to use a bunch of fuel up to check if i can still use the sub tank down below half full, but i am hopefull

                      It is posted somehere here but the filter between the tanks is not filtering fuel between the tanks, it takes fuel from the fule pump in the main tank and returns it to the main tank but via a return , i believe with a venturi branch which is connected to the sub tank. This means that if the pump cant push fuel through the filter there will be no venturi and fuel will eventually not get drawn (or very reduced) from the sub tank. Also if the sub is full and the main is empty, the fuel in the sub can block the breather pipe between tanks . Anyhow I'll post more on how it works once i have confirmed that i know what Im talking about

                          Excellent. Much easier to fix and replace the filter than chase down the several complicated other possible issues.

                                Hi all.

                                Soooooo

                                seems that the fuel filter that lives above the tail shaft is the culprit after all.
                                Just filled up from almost completely empty put in 165 litres (meaning about 15 litres is reserve)
                                so problems i had that were caused by this were.
                                1. fuel starvation when running from second (aux/rear) tank
                                2. unable to fill main tank.
                                3. problem with fuel cap / breather system causing high vaccum.
