  • starter motor fix 90 series

Had the old click click problem with my 90 series , got quotes from $380 - $490 to replace including labour, stuff that i said so i had a crack at it myself after doing some research on basic repairs of starter motors i then proceeded to work out the best way to get it out.Whatever you have been told you DO NOT have to disconnect the steering linkage to the steering wheel , just follow my dodgey youtube vid and it shows you everything you need to know to fix this starter problem. It basically comes down to a simple cleaning of contact points inside the solenoid and costs absolutely nothing except a few hours of your time and like in my case a 6 pack of Tooheys ! so give it a crack

Thanks for posting MG. That's a very informative video. I haven't had any issues yet with my starter motor but I think I can't too far off with the amount of mud my car is subjected to.

    +1 rep from me

Hi Fellas. Just watched the video. All good barring two points. Never use bricks for supports and regarding the 2 contacts - you will notice the nicely turned recessed ring on one of the contacts! This is not supposed to be there. It is caused by arcing and is electrical erosion. For some strange reason these starter solenoids only ever erode one of the contacts. You can probably get away with cleaning up the plunger carefully if it is not too bad but if it is really pitted turn it on a lathe or replace it. The two contacts are only around $30 NZ so why would you clean them up unless you are stuck out in the boonies because those starters are a real bitch to get out particularly if you own a diesel. I have done around 7 or eight of my vehicles and this is around the only grief they give other than the clutch drive and this is fairly rare. Otherwise a good effort - good on you mate. Cheers, Derb.

i have just replaced the contacts and cleaned up the plunger on my vzj95 starter solenoid. just as i went to reinstall i reallised i was missing one of the 2 round covers that stick out about 20mm (toyota part number 28119). will this need to be replaced with the same part or can the holes just be covered with a silicon or similar
