I've done plenty of sand driving never been bogged either, I guess the other reason to have an auto is if you can't drive a manual properly

I actually find manual easier on sand, my mates auto d4d hilux is not as responsive as the manual.

Yeah I'm happy with it too, but with the gutless 1kz, when it comes to huge dunes when you need the momentum and power to keep it, the auto allows you to keep maximum power/torque to the wheels as it slows......
But I'm happy to have a challenge. On flat sand it's also good to be able to select your gear and hold it, where autos will kick down.
You might have to make a video of roll starting with no battery & post it :-)

haha roll start has saved me when i was in the middle of the blue mountains, i hate autos, spend most of their time choosing which gear they want to be in.

im so confident it will start without a battery

Quite frankly the auto pisses me off... Especially when in "eco" mode. I never drive in eco mode anymore
So much of the power in the auto is lost in the torque converter. I am seriously considering getting a torque converter lock switch installed.
The auto is most definatly not a drivers car.

Don't drive my auto in 'D', I use the 'S' mode and select what gear I want, or as needed. I drive it like a clutchless manual, much easier to drive after suffering some long term injuries to hips, a knee and lower back.

A few others on this forum who own autos also drive in 'S' mode all the time.

Not sure how a Prado is a driver's car anyway. The torque convertor does good things especially in sand. But that is just me. Wouldn't have another family 4wd manual unless the auto option was not up to the job.

Automatic Vs Manual - Is the Auto a "Drivers" car?

I was left a little underwhelmed after test driving a new 2.8 D4D auto, and decided to stay with our 95 series TD manual. A few days later I tracked down a manual 2.8 (they're a bit like hens teeth in Melbourne!), drove it on Friday and promptly coughed up a deposit. Should be picking it up next week.

Much preferred the manual, both wife and I currently have manuals and can't see it changing anytime soon. Our other car is a Golf manual and whilst the Prado is no comparison, I still found the manual transmission more engaging and "driveable" than the auto D4D.

                          Time will tell i guess!

(If anyone wants a 95 TD manual let me know!)

This sounds scarily similar to my wife & I in 2010 and we went the manual 150 over the auto. There have been times I would prefer to be driving an auto and many more times I prefer the manual but I still have no regrets in buying the manual. I really did want to get the auto then but just couldn't as I still enjoyed driving the manual much more than the auto. After 6 years with the 150 manual, no regrets.

By the way prior to getting the 150, I had a 2001 TD manual and my wife had (and still has) TD Golf manual.
