  • Rear Door Jammed Closed

    Hi All,
So much great reading on this site, wish I'd found it earlier.
My 2005 Prado rear door has jammed closed and will only open about 5mm with a huge pull on the door. This happen once before about 3 weeks ago and I removed the inner cover over the door handle had a tug on the cables still all connected, tried the handle and the door opened, after playing with the mechism and opening and closing a number of times couldn't fault the system and left it as nil fault found door serviceable.
I've done the same again door is still jammed, does anyone know how to remove the trim, while the door is closed and any other suggestion on a fix before I go to the dealer and have to take out a loan.
Before anyone post is there anything stuck in the door the answer is no.

    Thanks, Will

    Bung Door

Ullo Will. This may help....or not.I recently had the same prob with my daughters rear door on her territory .After @ 2 bloody hrs it was Ok ,Then bung again soon after .the 2nd time I found a connecting rod 300ml long & bent at right angles at the catch theninto a hole & 4ml sticking thru & it was to have a plastic thingy to hlod it in place. Well under tension when opening the door it popped out . So 1hr later & $1 for a new plastic thingy all is well ! This si the best I can do ..Good luck . M/J

      Thanks M/J
I had another look down the 5mm gap and couldn't see any sort of connecting rod sticking out, I had a probe at the lock with a screwdriver (can't do much through 5mm gap) . Or is this rod hiden in behind the trim, if so any suggestion on how to remove the door trim with the door closed.

      Thanks again
      Will

This might be a long shot but have you got anything in the rear door pocket?
We had that issue up the Gibb River Road last year and it turned out to be the rear pocket sagging and getting jammed in the door.
(found only after removing the door trim and stuffing around for a couple of hours)

My rear door has jammed a few times when it has got too much dust in the locking mechanism. Try pushing the door handle forward (to close the door harder) then pull the handle open, all in the one action (push then pull). Worked for me

there is also another thing we found with the rear door. make sure there is nothing stuck in the door (ie something that was on the floor has slipped into the door before closing.) this caused our door to get stuck a few times. the push and pull does work sometimes. when you do get it open, spray some wd40 into the latching mech in the door. there is most liking a fair bit of gunk in there.

              Thanks,
Tried them all ans nonething is stuck in the door.
Had to give in, and booked it in to the Toyota Dealer in Canberra. They couldn't fix it either, and advised they will have to damage the lock mechism to open it. Cost $560 and wait 6 weeks for the mechism from Japan. Suprise Suprise they wouldn't tell me how they removed the interior trim with the door closed.
Will keep updated and would still like any other suggestions.

My rear door has just got stuck too. and I followed the hints and sprayed in some WD40 and also PTFE spray.
It did finally open, but I doubt if it was dirt or dust. From what I coud work out, the parrot beak in the door mechanism, that locks over the striker bar on the body when the door is closed, has a plastic/rubber cover over the steel. When the handle is pulled this beak releases allowing the door to be pulled open
Over time this cover breaks down or tears and then when the door is closed can jam in the release mechanism so that the beak will not release properly.
Using long nose pliers I was able to tear off the offending rubber.
The door now appears to work properly.
as an aside, I did call out RACQ which here is run by the local Toyota agent. The mechanic did not pick up on the beak problem, just said i would need to replace the whole lock. I will check this out with the spare parts guys.
Also, I showed him how the hinge side seam on my door had opened through opening stress. He siad he had never seen that before. I explained he probably wouldn't as how many times do they actually check out the cargo door, and why would they. it's the panelbeater s who know all about it.
