  • Can a high lift jack be used without buying aftermarket bullbar & rear steps???

    Hey there,

Through pure disbelief of how much it will cost me to set my vx up with a decent bullbar and rear step - I want to know... Is there an aftermarket bolt on product that will give my 120 some jacking points that will be sufficient for a high lift jack???

Also has anyone - somehow - modified a standard alloy toyota bull bar so it can be jacked from??? possibly from the winch cradle - somehow???

Just putting the question out there before I fork the 4 odd grand out simply so I can jack my car up!!!

    Waiting for some advise!!!

What's the reason for the hi-lift? A good hydraulic bottle jack is much safer and easier to use.

Not a fan of the exhaust jacks, you don't have a whole lot of control over the raise/lower

Should be fairly easy to fabricate something to bolt onto the winch mounting holes on the Sovereign bar as long as the winch cradle is installed.

You could also jack off the tow hitch. You can also get the sling attachment that go around the rims and jack off that.

So far, I haven't found a bottle jack that can go from very low to high enough. Happy to take suggestions though.

                  high enough for what?

Trekky is on the money with the wheel and bumber lifts, that should cover most scenarios where you would use a high lift.

High enough to change a flat front tyre on a lifted Prado.

I put the jack under the suspension not the chassis, so OE works fine.

Hi lift jacks are not recomended for changing tyres.

                      Cheers Andrew

Figured that's what I had to do should I have a flat, but still wanted a bottle jack to jack from the chassis.

Having had a fair bit of experience with highlift jacks in a previous life, and witnessing a few injuries and some very close calls for inexperienced & experienced users, I consider them the most dangerous piece of 4wd kit you could use. By their design alone they are inherently unstable. Yes, they can be adapted for various applications, but in most situations another option/method is usual available. IMO, an air bag or a good bottle jack and one stand, will get you out of most situations.

I agree Bazza, its interesting that the first 2 pices of recovery kit people seem to buy is a snatch strap and a high lift, the 2 most dangerous pieces of recovery kit!

Like anything else, a good training session on high lift use is time well spent before having to use one in the bush.
