Well yes a hydraulic is definately easier to use, but im planning a big trip thru the north of oz and im sure a hydralic jack will cause trouble when your bogged up to the axle in sand or mud... also a high lift will also double up as a crude winch if its needed...

Sure - exhaust jacks look cool and would definatley work well but I look at it like this... they get punctures and they take up more room in the back of me vx!!! I dont think this is what im looking for!

Andrew, can you explain that a bit further? The owner's manual indicates the rear axle as a jacking point. How exactly do you place the jack for the front?

Use a base plate and some wood packers, good luck using the hi-lift as a winch.

As Amts said, under the lower control arm.

I dont think that a highlift jack for getting you out of deep bogs is going to be that useful. It might, but in reality if you are bogged in mud then a high lift is going to be a nightmare. If yu are bogged in sand it might help, but a set of maxtax and a good shovel will be far easier, safer and quicker, not to mention lighter than the high lift.

Have you ever tried winching with a high lift? once again it can be done but it is very very slow, bloody hard work and you need to carry more heavy chain to make this work. Highlifts have their uses, however I see them as a last bit of kit to complete your recovery gear rather than a first option, jacking and side ways shunting in deep ruts is probably where they are the most useful, I have only ever done this once and it was the camper trailer we were shunting sideways.

For my money, if you are travelling solo around the North of the country my recovery kit would go like this. In order until you don't want to spend any more, or cant carry any more.

                  1. good shovel
                  2. Maxtrax.
                  3. Snatch strap, shackles, bridle etc.
                  4. Electric winch, winch extension.
                  5. Highlift Jack or air bag.

I might even consider the winch to be more important than the snatch strap, especially if you are travelling solo, snatch straps are a lot cheaper though.

                  Cheers Andrew

Very sound advice there Andrew, I have all of the above (except the air bag) and would agree with the order you have put these in. If you are on your own a snatch strap isn't going to be much good to you Having said that it can be used opportunistically and is relatively cheap.

This rather unfotunately bogged dump truck weighing 70 tone was extracted using a standard Hydraulic jack! This was done at my work earlier this week, fortunately I had better things to do than help out.

Andrew, can I please have a job where you work playing with big trucks?

I find it hard to believe that a hydraulic jack was used in favour of that perfectly good Hydraulic CAT Excavator in the back ground of the first photo?

Consider storage of the high lift jack and the extra weight you carry around with one on board. I've owned a high lift jack for over 30 years and can count the times I've actually used it on one hand.

Even though that is a 30 tonne excavator it can only lift around 5 tonne, a bit short of what is needed to lift the old girl. The excavator was used to unload as much of the material out of the back of the truck as possible in order to lighten the load. The "standard" hydraulic jack was a 50 tonne jack, but still only lifts around 250mm; so just shows that you can recover a vehicle without needing a high lift!

Have a read of Len Beadells books, he recovered his old jeeps and Landrover countless times using a hydraulic bottle jack rather than a High Lift, And offroading doesn't get any harder than what Len did in his day.

                                Cheers Andrew
