  • 96 Prado TX - Buying New Tyres, which ones?

    Hi all, new guy here with a question. I'm own a 96 Prado TX and am currently running Michelin LTX A/T2 265/70's tyres on it. The tyres are pretty much shot, and I am looking to purchase some new ones. I've done several hours of searching here and all over the internet, and haven't been able to find a satisfactory answer as of yet.

    My question is this:What Brand and tyre would best fit my use? (I know this is a very subjective question, but any help is appreciated)

    My Prado is mainly used as a highway vehicle. I've owned it for 1 1/2 years now, and put 37,000 km on it. 30,000 of those are highway, 6,000 around town, and roughly 1,000 km dirt/sand in the bush. I live in Botswana, so I pretty much never encounter mud, most of my off-road use is in the loose sand of the Kalahari desert.
    I am looking for a tire that will be good on the highway with economy and road noise, but still provide traction on the once a month or so occasion I take it out for a spin in the bush. I really don't want to put the money out to import Michelin's here, I bought the vehicle with them already on it, but they cost about $560 a piece to get here...
    A guy here suggested getting the General AW tyres that Toyota is putting on their Fortuners and some Prados, thoughts?

    Any suggestions/opinions are great, thanks guys!

    Hi samhammett,

    I usually rave about Micky MTZ's but in your case definitely not. Also, I don't know what's available in your market so won't recommend any brands.

    Generally speaking, sand does not require an aggressive tyre pattern (only low air presure), so a HT or AT tyre will be fine for your purpose. If it were me, I'd look for a hard compound AT.

      OK, Brands available are Dunlop, Pirreli, General, and BF Goodrich. Any of those sound suitable?

        The best there is Goodrich. Go with AT as Glen says and you will be fine!

          The BFG AT's are very popular. I also hear good things about Pirelli Scorpions. Do you have Bridgestones there? There's the D694 which is also quite popular.

            I have yet to come across and Bridgestones. I'm sure I could order them in, but only for Mega $$$. Any input on km expectancy on the Goodrich tyres? Thanks so much for your help!

              With strict proper maintenance and used in normal conditions BF Goodrich AT could last 60.000 to 80.000 kms.

              I have seen cases that reach the 100.000 Kms.

                OK, Thanks for all your help guys. I'm gonna try to get some Bridgestone AT tyres, but we'll see what happens. This is Africa and things don't always work out the way they should

                  Haha, I wasn't able to get the BF Goodrich or Bridgestone tyres until next month, and I need new tyres long before next month. As expected they were extremely expensive too. My only options are Dunlop GrandTreks, which I've heard tons of bad things about, and Pirreli's. SOooo it looks like I'm going in on Monday to get the Pirreli's.

                    With a quick search i just did it looks like you should be able to get Yokohama tyres. I have Geolander AT/S GO12's which have just done 10,000km's. They are wearing extremely well and are great on bitumen and with the small amount (too small) of offroad, they have performed well as well. Just another option of tyre that doesn't get much 'air time'
                    By air time i mean talked about much, not how much time the wheel spends off the ground
                    Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

                      Yeah, I looked into Yokohama's as well, I've heard a few good things about them, but they only had Yokohama road tyres, and while I don't do too much off-road, even the tar roads here are rough. There are also quite a few gravel roads I travel frequently that would rips the road tyres up in no time.

                        Well I ended up getting the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs. I must say that so far I am quite impressed with them. They are a very comfortable and quiet tyre on the road, with a decent amount of tread to facilitate my sandy 4x4 needs. Thanks for all your help everyone! I'm getting ready to take a trip to Namibia, thru the Kalahari, so I'll try to post some results and numbers after the trip.

                          Good choice - those or the Yokohama Geolander AT/-S would have been my recommendation for the kind of driving you do and the price (at least going off the US/Australian price) - I am trying to get a new set of Scorpions here and they are pretty rare as whenever they come in they get snapped up. The LTX A/T 2 are a great tyre but obviously expensive for you and given that you don't have to deal with mud or snow wouldn't really be any better than the Yokohama or Pirelli.
                          2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear.                             Well, I wanted to pop back in and just give you all an update on our trip and how the tyres performed. I am quite pleased overall with the tyres, they were marvelous on the variety of surfaces we encountered. We began our trip by traveling 4x4 only roads along the northern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This 220km of primarily sand track, with a large number of mud holes or dubious depth. Thankfully none of them were too deep, as I do not have a snorkel, but the tyres plowed right through the mud with no difficulties, and self cleaned the mud out very well. Throughout the remainder of the trip we were primarily on bitumen, with about 300km of dirt/mud/sharp rocks track thrown in there to provide access to the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. The tyres performed well on all surfaces encountered and gave rather good km per liter on the highway.
                            All in all -
                            4611km traveled, 11L of Diesel to every 100km overall. Very little wear evident on the tyres. Traveled some pretty rough track over some sharp volcanic rocks, but no cuts or missing blocks of tread are evident. I am extremely pleased with these tyres, and would highly recommend them to anyone with similar needs as mine.
