I would love some feedback on radios.
I would like a hand held attached to external antenna or is a mounted unit more powerfull and relliant.
Any advice on antenna for the bull bar too ??
    Thanks those with the knowledge
    Marc

    What kind of radio?

I assume you mean UHF CB?. I suggest that a mounted unit will be more powerful. Have a look at the GME range, and ZCG antennas.

As an interesting thought... The powerful handhelds are 5W, and I think the "mounted" UHF's are also 5W... If you had an external antennae on your bullbar that was attached to your handheld (Same concept as mounted), then would there be a difference between them?

        Yep
I thought that there might be hand helds out there that are 5w .
        Any recomended brands?
If i go with mounted whats a good brand small and not going to bang the knees on it when mounted on drivers side.
Id like the unit removable for the city driving as living in Syd with all the mad people .

I use the Icom 440 with rfi antenna. Great radio. All tucks away with everything including speaker on the mic piece.

GME usually does a pretty good job for what most people are looking for.

Be aware that they are changing over to the 80 channel radios from 40 channels. Get the 80 channel.

hi trompie i have a gme 6100 hand held , yes its 5 watt . if i put it down on the centre console i will miss half the transmissions from guys that are 50 metres in front of me or behind. when running in convoy i have to have it clipped to the sunroof or the neck of my shirt . i have spoken to reps from gme and i can mount an external aerial which will plug into the top of the radio which means that if you want to get out of the car with it you have to unscrew the external and plug in the normal aerial . not a good solution . i dont recomend this radio if you want to converse over any sort of distance . the next model up which is a much larger unit is available with an in car mount and external . i know nothing about it . my time again ,i would buy a dedicated in car radio as the amount of time you actually use it outside the vehicle is minimal . my 2 cents worth , (disclaimer : this is an opinion expressed my myself at this time and is in no way intended to be sarcastic or tongue in cheek or taking the piss out of an ethnic minority).

Hi there Big Block, I am waiting on the delivery of my D4D GXL in about 4 weeks and am getting together all of the extras that I can now so I am ready to go when it arrives. I was also going to get the Icom 440 with rfi antenna (will be selling my Icom 400Pro and antenna from current car). I like the fact that the rfi is removable and the main box of the Icom 440 can be hidden away, can I ask how you setup all works and where you have mounted the box and mic in the cabin, any pics would be great.

                Thanks in advance

Hi guys, will take some pics on the weekend. I should add that this is my first Icom and previously have had gme. Both great radios but I think I'd give the Icom the edge for clarity and usability.

I have a Icom IC-41 Handheld 5watt radio. It's been fantastic, I had plans of wiring it to an external antenna in the car but I have decided to get a Icom IC-440N. I purchased my handheld through the below company were great to deal with and the best value I found. Hope this information helps.

                          The 4705 is 1.2m and 6db and the 4706 is 2.1m is 9db.

They're great aerials, hard to break and perform faultlessly (for me). I have one of each on the prado.

It's surprising how much extra wind resistance a 2.1m aerial has over 1.2m though.

For those who are thinking of purchasing the gme make sure that you get at least a three year warranty. My tx3440 is in for repairs and I haven't used it that much.I would go the Icom any time.Just my experience.
