  • GTG 2012 Minimum Vehicle Requirements

The website will be up and running within the next day or so with a full list, but before that; here is some info on the one that always causes the most controversy!

    Recovery points

In the minimum vehicle requirements we have set you will see that we have specified “suitable” recovery points. Given the controversial nature of recovery points we will offer the following as a guide to what the committee believes to be suitable!

Original equipment tie down points: these are suitable for towing only. They are not suitable for snatching or winching.

Outback Ideas recovery points (or similar) when used with a bridle are considered suitable for most recoveries including snatching and winching. These recovery points must be attached with minimum grade 8.8 bolts.

ARB bullbar loops when used in conjunction with a bridle are considered suitable for most recoveries including snatching and winching, high tensile bolts with a minimum grade of 8.8 should be used on these as well.

Towbars are considered suitable for most recoveries including snatching and winching, The use of a recovery hitch is needed for winching, and is also advisable for snatching. If using the hitch pin to attach the snatch strap this must be a minimum of grade 10.9 metric or grade 8 imperial. The towball MUST NOT be used for recoveries under any circumstance.

Rated recovery hooks (10,000lb) securely attached to the vehicle chassis or on solid mounting points that are securely attached to the chassis using minimum grade 8.8 bolts or grade 5 if using imperial bolts; are considered suitable for most recoveries including snatching and winching, especially when used in conjunction with a bridal.

These requirements are NON-NEGOTIABLE! If you attend this event without meeting these requirements, you will not be included in GTG activities.

See Ya in SA The Committee

If you look at the minimum vehicle requirements on the GTG website you will notice that a winch is mandatory for those looking to take a camper along the first section of the Border track, a question was asked about this in the discussion thread and I have copied here as it will no doubt be easier for people to find the info here if they look down the track.

Not questioning the requirement, just trying to assess the options and the justification for getting a winch.
Hi Graeme, When we transit through Ngarkat; at this stage we are planning 2 options, one all the way along the Border Track, and second down the centre track and then onto the border track. Both tracks are similar only the dunes on the first section of the border track are much larger. when I refer to the Border track from now on I am refering to the one way section at the start that those doing the centre track will miss.

The likely scenario for trailers on the first section of the border track is that they will almost certainly not make it, therefore recoveries are almost a given, snatching is going to be problematic at best, maxtrax are always an option but we made a winch mandatory as that may be the safest and most practical way, but it all depends on the circumstances on the day.

Having a winch doesn't gaurantee you will be able to do the border track with a trailer, for example, a person with a 1kz manual would be wasting their time even trying, you are going to need horsepower as well, you are also going to need to be willing to use all the horsepower you have. Likewise if your camper trailer is really heavy, such as a Kimberly, we would suggest that you take the centre track as you don't stand a chance of getting over the dunes. And of course the logistics say that we simply cant take 20 or 30 vehicles with campers down the Border Track if every one of those needs to be recovered; possibly on more than one occasion.

So to sum up, for a trailer down the Border Track section a winch is mandatory, you will also require a D4D or V6, or possibly a 1kz with chip and exhaust running a high tune, a modestly weighted camper trailer, experience towing over dunes, confidence in your ability in sand and dunes, a wiilingness to wring the neck out of your Prado, and be fit enough to do some serious digging if things go really pear shaped and you bury yourself big time.

The centre track will still provide good fun for those with all of the above, it may still provide a challenge for those with low power and experience, but by all means use it as an excuse to fit a winch. We expect the majority of people with CT's to take the centre track option.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers Andrew

How bout lets not start that old chesnut again

It has been very pleasing that not a single person attending the GTG has questioned the recovery point requirements, all have fitted or agreed to have recovery points fitted before the event, just common sense really, which unfortunately is not as common as it once was.

        Cheers Andrew

I have upgraded to a feroza with 12 inch rims and still intend on coming to the GTG. Can I confirm that because the vehicle is lighter than those bulky Praydoos that the tie down point will suffice? I did consider RATED recovery points but they will double the weight of my vehicle.

Also will there be a somewhere to buy ice periodically? The feroza does not have enough room for dual batteries and even the cigarette lighter puts a large strain on the battery.

Finally, will we be night driving? If so I will need to pack the hand generated spots, again, the electrical system struggles with any extra power draw and frankly most room is taken up by the 1 long range fuel tank (aka jerry can).

                      Regards
