  • What a thirsty Prado!

    hey all,

I bought brandnew Prado 3.4L VX on YR2002 with some rig(bull bar, tow bar, side steps, weathershield, plate) and it's thirsty like a buffalo, which runs petrol 20L/100KM in city or 15L/100KM motor way.

does anybody share my experience? is there any improvement considered to reduce it?

    cheers, sydneysider

Give it a good service, make sure you use atleast twin electrode sparkplugs, give the MAF sensor and throttle position sensor a good clean with the correct contact cleaner (make sure you follow the directions on the tin to the letter), check you tyre pressures, check that your brakes are not dragging, You should be getting high 11's to mid 12's per 100k's on the h/way (but that depends on your driving style and whats going on around you).

My 3.4L Auto was consistently getting +19L/100KM with mostly busy Sydney traffic, but I had 2" lift, 32" Mud tyres, about 100Kgs of armour up front and about 100Kgs of gear in the back.

My 4.5L Auto 80 series is getting 19L/100KM with 32" mud tyres and an Alloy bar so I think the fuel usage of my 3.4L Prado was excessive. I don't know what the problem was I never tried to fixed it.

Get the throttle body and upper cylinder head cleaned and possibly an on car injector clean plus a quality fuel additive. Run some 98 Octane fuel, make sure your air cleaner is clean and your tyres are at 40psi(dependent on the tyres). Make sure your running the correct oil and that the car has been serviced. My 120 Series v6 that I used to own avereaged around 14L to 15L/100kms with 33s.

That's ok my ks diesel is only getting 16 per hundred around town.with the price of Diesel at the moment it would be uch more economical to have a Petrol.

My 3.4 gets 11's or 12's depending on traffic, Using 98 oct in a 3.4 will make no difference, the computer is not smart enough to know what octaine rating is being used, unlike the 120, and the 150 needs 95 oct as a min. I'm using Iridium plugs in mine too, they have a quad electrode set up, I have just replaced the MAF sensor, and cleaned everything else electrically controlled. It now has over 333000k's on the clock too.

I never really bought much into the idea of the 90 series computer needing time to adjust to 95 or 98 octane, or the computer not being smart enough to adjust to it. I just think the octane increase in 95 or 98 isn't a significant enough jump from 91 for it to really offer any performance increase. The engine would run the exact same on 87 octane as it does with 91. Try a adding a small 300ml bottle of injector cleaner in both of your tanks equalling 150L of fuel and see how much more power you get (assuming product directions say 300ml is to be used wit 150L of fuel). You'll notice it aright!

In the late 90's oil companies produced detergent type additives for unleaded fuels to minimise carbon build-up problems for stop start motoring. These products are added at a bare minimum level because of the additional cost, and the oil companies have been able to create lucrative after-market sales of additives in fuel by carefully minimising the amount added to the petrol we buy at the pump. I think 95 octane and 98 octane fuels are a complete waste of money... 95 octane especially. Now they've done one better with 100 octane appearing at some pumps now. Soon it will be 102 octane, then 105 and so forth.

Shell has advertised the market slogan, "More power, more quickly" and it's a crock. If they were more generous with the octane rating then you'd actually notice the power increase. For the $30 cost increase to fill both tanks with a 98 octane fuel, you're better off running a $10 bottle of injector cleaner which does the exact same thing, but far better. As an example, Shell Optimax used to be 7.7 cents more per litre than unleaded, but no their VPower is 20 cents more expensive and it's just a scam. I refuse to use the stuff. I just use the 91ron stuff and run injector cleaner twice a year and runs smooth as all year round and fuel enonomy is the average of 12-14L per hundred with around town driving & 9L per hundred or a bit less highway driving. What do other people think? It's a very interesting subject this. Feel free to agree or dissagree with me on this one.

Brett you get 9L or less per 100 freeway driving ?? Mate you did say feel free to agree or dissagree. I dissagree with your fuel figures.Mate I would love to see any 90 series get 9L per 100k or less freeway driving, this is nearly better then D4D figures and your running bigger profile tyres which requires more pushing especially up hills. Im not sure how your working your fuel figures out but some one is wrong. People dream of cracking the 9's in a D4D 120. The 120 V6 gives better economy then a 3.4 V6 90 series. based on speed limits and roughly the same driving conditions, distance, temps, same tyres and pressures etc I can guarantee my 120 has so far on every trip done better then my old 3.4 90 series and on par (some times) with my old 90 turbo diesel as well. Even in my old 90 series V6 driving at different speeds just to experiment with economy (remembering its the same road same trip I know every bend in the road no cruise control activated) I even sat on 85k once (was killing me) and not once ever did I crack even 10L per 100 in my V6 my diesel yes but only just at 9.8L per 100 sitting on 85/90k on the freeway. They also did testing on the 95 octane fuel and there is a noticeable differnce to the 91 (normal unleaded not E10crap) and the 98 was just a waste of money, This was done in house lab testing. I never 98 unless Im sitting on empty and there is no 91 or 95 for what ever reason BUT WILL NEVER run E10 in either of my cars. Mate very rare I disagree with some one (might think it and keep to my self) but couldnt help myself with this one. No offence intended towards you but I still stand saying no one I know of has ever got 9 or less in a 3.4 V6 and you dont say wether yours is auto or manual ?? but in the 90's I have found the autos useing less on the freeway due to lock up convertor and also rev less then the manual version.. Again no offence ment....... Cheers Steve

it appears interesting. any side impact on the engine or system by adding the cleaner?

It's very difficult to believe you're getting 11-12L/100Km in traffic with a modified Prado (it's even a good figure for a stock one). Did you ever have consistantly higher figures?

Mine is 17L on average, 15-16L on highway and near 20L offroading. On very rare occasions, on highway, I might get 13L/100 KM. I've cleaned the MAF, replaced sparks, tyres at high pressure, brakes completely rebuilt, air filter is fine.

When the MAF was playing up, I was getting high 17's. It also depends on traffic situations, if you sitting in stationary traffic, of cause the fuel consumption goes out the window, but that is with all cars, but steady traffic it is in the 12's, get it on the highway and it drops into the 11's. I'm getting better fuel consumption in a Petrol Prado, then what I got with my diesel 80, and I have much more power and revs to play with, not to mention not having to use a clutch. I also get better fuel consumption without using the cruise control.

Try replacing your thermostat. Maybe its stuck open and its dumping too much petrol thinking its ruunning a cold start! This is also a fix for 120 v6. Thermostat opens early around 30C to 40C!
